Chapter Ten

Phyllis stopped working in the bar. The first night where she didn't have to dress up in a skimpy barely-there clothes, she found herself wondering what would she do in her life from now on.

She didn’t know what to do and all that she could do in her house was to pace, turn the TV on, then off, rummage through her refrigerator then more pacing. She called Stephen, asking him what he was doing. What was happening in the bar? What were the reactions of the patrons?

"They were at lost and very disappointed, honey." Stephen had said. Instead of feeling bad, a bubble of laughter emerged from her throat.

"That's perfect." She whispered and Stephen chuckled.

"For you, honey, but for my business, it's not." Then it crashed to Phyllis how it would affect Stephen's business. She had been thinking only of herself, she was so happy that Stephen understood and that Colin took her that she actually shut every one off. There was not much of everyone because the fact was that she only had Stephen, now with the addition of Colin and Caroline. Another smile graced her face.

"I'm so sorry, Stephen. I---"

"You did what you think were right and I think it was the right thing too." Stephen interrupted her. "You did great, honey. It's time for you to stop this life you've been having and start living...For real."

Phyllis smiled. She was not sure if she believed him when he said she could start living. She knew that the gray clouds would always hover above her head, shadowing her life. And as long as those clouds were there, she'd never be able to start living like how he wanted her to do.

"I know you'll say that. You always say that."

"Because I have always believed that,"

When the call ended, she started pacing again. Then she started vacuuming her living room, and then her room then she started washing all her plates, and the silverwares she could find in her kitchen. But despite all those things that she had done, she still had this gaping hole in her chest.

She was missing Colin and he hadn't called her yet.

She retired for the night, earlier than she would normally sleep but what else would she do. All that left for her to do was to get her house upside down then rearrange everything from there. That was absurd. Not long after this, she'd develop OCD.

As she flopped down on her bed, right after she freshened up and wore one of Colin's shirts that she managed to take home, she ended up staring in her ceiling. All her dim lights were on, because now that she was alone, the night had scared her yet again. Since she met Colin there had been no night where she had to sleep alone, Colin was always there.

Since she met Colin, she only had one nightmare and he had been there when she woke up and he soothed her. Then she fell back asleep, despite the fact that she woke up from a terrifying dream.

But right now, Colin wasn't beside her.

Her phone rang and she quickly took it then answered, hoping that it would finally be him.

And she was right.

"Doll face," He said and she felt her shoulders sag in relief. What had she thought, that he forgot her, that he didn't want to talk to her as much as she wanted to talk to him? How did their 'not-so-serious' relationship turn to like this?

"Hey," she said. She wanted to say more, she wanted to ask him questions but she didn't want to scare him.

"I've been really busy. How are you?" He asked and her lips quivered with emotion. He was in North Carolina, talking about deals with some company that needed renovation or something. She didn't know the specifics but she knew that he'd be back in two days.
