After homeroom we all went to our regular classes. It was finally lunch time, me and Camille bought our lunches and went outside and sat by the fountain. I was glad lunch was last period; it's been a long day. When lunch ended I began walking to my locker to get my things.
"Why are you going to your locker we got cheer practice today, remember?”
"Haha, I so knew that".
"Sure you did, Camille said.”
I walked in to the gym and noticed all the girls including Camille were gathered around in a circle. I sat next to Camille.
“Hello ladies, as you know state finals are approaching and we need to raise about $5,000 for Florida,” Coach J said.
“We can do lots of fundraisers,” Camille said.
“Yeah, like benefit concerts, car wash, selling candy, and carnivals anything really,” I added.
“Good idea ladies, now let’s get to work, finals are in 2 months and we need to be in tip-top shape if we want to bring home first place this year.”
I got up and went to go stunt with my stunting group. Few hours later I looked up at the clock and it was 6pm, time to go home I smiled. I ran to the locker room to shower and pack my things.
“Camille, ready to go,” I shouted.
“Give me a second, wait for me by the car.” I shrugged and headed out to the parking lot.
While walking to my car I spotted Damon. I looked up and saw him walking towards me, my heart rate accelerated. Just his presence made my adrenaline kick in. There was something eerie and mysterious about him. He gave off a vibe that not most “normal” people gave off. Lost in my own thoughts I almost didn’t notice him standing right in front me.
“Hey, uh Annabelle right?”
“Uh yea,” I smiled. He looked up at me, as though as he was trying to read me… the way I do to most people.
I whispered, “Are you a seer?”
“A what?” he said.
“Uh, never mind I said did you see her,” I said faking a laugh trying to play it off.
“I’m sorry, I should go,” I said while opening my car door.
“No wait,” he said.
“W-what?”
“I know what you are.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“No actually I don’t, now if you excuse me I have to go.”
I slightly pushed him away and got in my car. I was feeling impatient; it felt like Camille was taking ages in the locker room. I tried calling her but she didn’t pick up. I got out of my car and noticed Damon was gone, I ran towards the school. The front door was locked; I tried out back and nothing. I looked up to the second floor and saw an open window, I saw a ladder by the door, and I leaned it against the wall and climbed up. The school was dim, I ran down to the locker room. It was quiet; I yelled out for Camille but heard nothing. I ran up and down the corridors of the gigantic locker room and didn’t see her. I went inside the showers and heard hot water running which made it hard to see. The air was fogged up and so were the mirrors. As I closed each shower the air started clearing out and that was when I saw her. She was unconscious.
“Camille, please wake up.”
I shook her gently and nothing, she was still breathing I could hear her heart throbbing, but she was slowly dying. I was confused and I didn’t know what to do. I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed 911 and held her tightly till they came. They asked how this happened and I was lost for words. I rode in the ambulance with her and impatiently waited in the waiting room. I hated waiting rooms; last time I was here was when my mother almost OD. I was slightly rocking and quietly sobbing, not wanting to disturb other families awaiting news for their loved ones. Camille’s parents were on their way but until then I was alone with no one to comfort me. I called grams; she was running an errand but promised me she’ll try to make it back in time. A male doctor interrupted my thoughts and I quickly got up awaiting news on Camille.
“D-doctor, is she okay?”
“She suffered a concussion, some broken ribs and an injured lung, luckily you got there in time but she’s stable.”
“May I go see her?”
“Right this way madam.”
I followed the doctor, and walked slowly behind him. There she was, lying on the hospital bed… broken.
She opened her eyes slowly and said, “Annabelle?” I ran to her bed side and hugged her while crying.
“W-what happened, who did this to you?”
“I don’t know, I couldn’t see very well but I did see a symbol on one of their arms.”
“What did it look like?”
“A crescent moon.”
“The council,” I whispered.
“What,” she murmured.
“Nothing, just rest.”
I walked to the other side of the room and sat on a chair. It was the council, it had to be. My grams said their signature symbol were crescent moons because they depended on the moon to practice necromancy. They were trying to kill her for knowing my secret, just like they did to my father. But how did they find out? I silently cried and noticed her parents walk in. They both look devastated, tired and hungry. Their thoughts were overwhelming me.
“Mr. and Mrs. Fields, she’s going to be okay I promise you.” I faked a smile.
They nodded in agreement and sat next to her. As I drifted off to sleep, he appeared in my dreams; the recurring conversation we had at the parking lot replayed in my mind like a broken tape. For some odd reason I feel connected to him, I feel like he’s also a seer; like me. I have to find him and confront him. But what if he’s evil, what if he was the one who did this to Camille, what if he tells my secret to the world and risk my grams of being killed by the council, what if they kill me and prevent me from fulfilling my mission. A million what-ifs were racing through my thoughts; I woke up frightened by my dreams and noticed grams in the room. She looked at me with a worried expression; she was listening to my thoughts and interfering with my dreams. I looked up and mouthed, ‘grams help me.’ She walked over to me and sat down.
“Belle, what happened today with Camille?”
“I-it was the council, Camille said she saw a crescent moon on their forearms, it has to be them but why?”
Grams look down. “They know, it’s starting.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The council and others like them who practice necromancy, they know. The revolution is starting; there hasn’t been a crescent moon in over a thousand years. They’re using this as an advantage to fulfill a prophecy; the anti-seer revolution.”
“Grams, what are you talking about?”
“There’s so much you don’t know. The anti-seer revolution is an ancient prophecy that mediums who practice necromancy wish to fulfill every time there’s a crescent moon which only happens every millennium. In order to complete the prophecy 12 seers must die. I’m afraid you’re running out of time, and I’m running out of strength to help you. You need more help, or seers like you and the faith of humanity would be destroyed.”
“But, how am I to do this alone. I need help from other seers.”
“I can help you find them; it's urgent that you find the moon stone in the ancient ruins of Rome that’ll help prevent the council to steal power from the moon.”
“When will the crescent moon be upon us?”
“You have exactly 30 days.”
“30 days? What … that’s nearly impossible.”
“It’s your duty to help save us, Belle.” She got up and walked way. 30 freaking days, 30 days and we’ll be dead. The human race lies on my shoulders, what a heavy burden.
