He came back for me, was the first thought that ran through my head.

Caleb was standing a meter from me, and he didn’t look like he was moving any closer.  He didn’t say anything, but the terror in his eyes had turned to confusion, and it was all I could do not to run to him.

I slowly stood up, all the time keeping my eyes on him, and brushed the dirt from my torn hospital gown.  A light breeze hit my exposed skin causing me to break out in shivers, and I looked down to assess the tatters of my gown.  I gasped.  There was barely anything left.  My wings had torn the fabric, and there now was a large slit in the back of it, and it was hardly hanging on my shoulders.

Caleb had seemed to realize my dilemma, and he slowly shuffled over to me, the whole time looking at me.  My cheeks flamed crimson red and I lowered my head, dropping my eyes to look at the ground.  A cough sounded from in front of me, so I brought my head back up to see Caleb taking his shirt off.

My mouth made a little pop as my lips parted in shock.  His skin was a gorgeous caramel brown, making me wonder if he worked out in the sun a lot.  He had biceps, but they were toned down, and he had a six-pack, but that wasn’t what had my attention.

On the left side of his body, under his arm was a black tattoo of a tree and it’s branches climbing up his side, but it looked like the tattoo was covering something that was underneath.  There were aggressive red scars that lined his throat and right shoulder, but there was another tattoo that covered only a small portion of the scars.

An angel wing inked in black was positioned on the right-hand side of his chest, and it looked just like my own wings.

Without realizing it, I raised my hand and touched the wing.  The feathers on the edge were long and elegant, and the ones that were where the wing attached to body were short.  My fingers traced the outline of it lightly, Caleb’s skin was burning under my touch and his heartbeat was running a race against my own.

He shivered slightly and I pulled my hand back, snapping back into reality.  Caleb looked uncomfortable as he looked at the ground, shifting his weight from one foot to another.  He raised his arm to give me his shirt, and I blushed again, as I had been staring at him shamelessly.

I grabbed it quickly and looked at him expectantly.  His eyes widened and looked down, his cheeks flaming, and he turned around to face the other way.  I tore away the ruin that was my hospital gown and pulled his shirt over my head.  He was taller than me so the shirt’s hem reached mid-thigh and I pulled at it trying to bring it down to cover more.

“You done yet?”  He said over his shoulder to me.  I didn’t answer right away.  The tree climbing his side spread out onto part of his back as well, but I could see the scars beneath.   They were small and red, and spread out like lightning across his skin.

            “Yeah,” I squeaked.

As he turned around, the sun behind him started to set and the sky turned a vibrant red, a red that was like blood.  My eyes widened in fright as my senses were assaulted by too many things at once.

I could smell the metallic scent of blood and rot hit my nose, I could taste blood in my own mouth and I could hear screams tear apart my eardrums.

Caleb was still standing in front of me, but now I could see red seeping through the ground at my feet, and bodies litter the ground.  My own scream joins the chorus of the others, and my hands covered my face, the nails digging into the skin.  My vision took on a red tinge, and all I saw was the people lying around me, and Caleb looking at me, only me.

Something wet was dripping down my face, and I slowly removed my hands from my face to look at them.  Blood covered my hands and ran down my arms, leaving trails of red stained on my skin.  The world was drenched in red, and screams filled every crevice.

I sink to my knees and feel a stabbing pain in my chest and look down to see a dagger lodged down to the hilt where my heart is.

Blood spilled from it and I could feel all my warmth leaving with it, and my body was going cold.

I look up to see Caleb standing over me and his green eyes are blazing like an ember as he looks at me.  He reaches down to pick me up and as his heat warms my cold body, everything turns back to normal.  There are no longer screams filling the air, or people covering the ground, and the sun was disappearing behind the mountains.

Caleb had an arm under my knees and another around my shoulders, and I snuggle my head into his neck, my breath tickling his skin.  I place my cold hand against his chest to feel his heartbeat racing with mine.

He pressed his lips against my hair, and then whispered into my ear.

“I’m here, Alex.  I’ll protect you.”
