Chapter 3-Harvest Moon
The time was close to around eleven at night but that was only my guess. The Eerie glow of the moonlight stretched across the landscape and through the cracks of the camper window. I was awaken in a daze after a few nudges to my shoulder by Crock. The others were already awake and at their designated positions. I couldn't help but feel Crock was getting worse. The darkness of the camper made it difficult to see his condition. His voice broke through the silence. "Are you ready and awake fellow or do you need a few more minutes, I need you at your best today." There was a brief delay but I responded rubbing my eyes "No I should be good, the trip to the house should wake me up." Crock nodded in acknowledgment and proceeded out the camper through the latch. His voice could be heard from outside as he spoke from atop. "Don't forget your bag fellow its atop the table. I already packed it, just double check and make sure I didn't forget anything and meet up with me, koon and roach." Before proceeding outside I rustled my jeans on that reeked like rancid meat from sweat. My shirt had been stain from many labors. Grass, dirt and scuffs covered most of it. My shoes or once shoes had been torn open from the nose. I proceeded to check my bag and with furthermore nothing else to do I exited the camper noticing crock, koon and roach all taking turns trying to break the lock that withholds the secret to our escape.
Roach's voice angerly bellowed out "Fuck this fucking, god damn fucking door, I don't care how much noise I make now I'm gunna break the nob with the hammer!" Koon grabbed onto Roach's arm "dude calm down don't create such a ruckus." Roach snapped back "Dont you fucking touch me you little prick" Roach's emotional state was still noticeably unstable his eyes had turned blood shot red, from most likely little amounts of sleep. Roach had gotten a hold of the sledge hammer and swung several times. The First two swings had missed or bent the lock down in a crooked fashion. The third and fourth swings were the finishing blows to remove the blockade from our path. After sating Roach's rage he shot forth a frontal kick to knock the door sideways. Out from the darkness a gust of dust was blown out from the many months of no man even stepping forth inside. Koon unwittingly spoke out. "yea kinda forgot to tell ya we haven't touched this shed in ages so don't mind the dust or cobwebs" Roach retaining his animosity "Just shut the fuck up and get in there" Koon stepped through the busted door and began to choke from dusted air. "(Cough) It's so thick in here I can't breath and I can't see can i borrow your lighter roach" roach fiddles in his pockets and tosses the lighter to koon "don't break it." Koon shuffles his feet along the floor so as not to trip into anything. Koon bumps into the light switch and pulls the switch. But from his lack of knowledge he forgets there is no electricity. "God dammit I need a source of light in here. I know I have a flashlight in here I just gotta find the drawers" after running into some tools spread across the floor koon finds the cabinet then fumbles through the drawers. Nuts, bolts and wire could be heard as he went through each one. After a brief delay he found the flashlight in the upper cabinet. "Found it!" He said in relief. "Excellent work but there's one fucking problem you ain't got no batteries" roach said in a demeaning way. " we'll if you had given me a second to respond you would understand that this flashlight doesn't need batteries , observe" soon as koon responded a winding could be heard as if something was charging and in that instant a flash of light had sparked and a ray had emitted from the shed exposing us from the darkness. "C'mon in guys it's all clear no one could get in anyway" roach made his way in first then crock then me. Crock spoke "so is this the project over here? Or are we riding this magic carpet?" Koon responded "remove the tarp smart ass it was just protecting it from moisture and other elements" tired of all this conflict I jumped forth removing the tarp in frustration. "Here I got it." As the tarp flew off a half sanded down and partly faded white Ford Thunderbolt had been revealed.
Residue of oil still had been there under the vehicle where many repairs and changes had taken place. The tires appeared low on air but that was the appearance. Koon proceeded to pop the hood open and revealing in his accomplishment. "Like I said its in good shape we just need a battery that can hold a charge at least" koon responded in disappointment. "We'll if fellows theory proves true we should be out of here in no time, in the mean time while we are out. pack all our tools and food stocks in the trunk. Oh and religion gas her up keep the half tank in the back as a spare along with anything we might need." Spoke Crock. Crock started to cough a little into his hand after he briefly spoke. "You ok crock?" As I confronted him. "Yea prolly just allergies or a cold it's nothing" saying as he threw his hands to his sides. "Alright let's head out if you're ready I got everything packed" I said forwardly in confidence. We both strut outside the camper towards the street and took the shortcut to my house through my neighbors backyard. He had a small farm in the back growing vegetables and fruits but it had all rotted and dried from the months of negligence. The shed connected to the bird coupe had been nailed and boarded shut as if to keep something in. But a massive overgrowth of plant life and ivy had grown over the shed and fencing around the house. We jumped the fence after evading a patrol of husks. Crock spoke forward "Lets make our way upstairs first then down to clear it out. We will have a better vantage point from upstairs."
