A loud echo of knuckles rapping on the door made me jump in the spot, making me get out of my own little world and re-evaluate my current condition. My body lay on the bed as my face was buried against my pillow. I had no energy nor motivation to move and I had a terrible headache caused by my half an hour long cry.

Maybe I should get that

I moved my head up from the bed and looked at the door, but I soon lose my strength and hit my face on the pillow once again.

Nope, I'm not doing it

"Emily, are you there? I'm getting kind of worried," The person behind the door talked.

"I'm fine!" I screamed with my face still on the pillow.

"Can we talk for a minute?" He asked.

It took me a minute to gather the energy to get up and I walk through the room to open the door.

"Tom, can it be another time?" I stood in front of him with red, and puffy eyes as I hide my body in a giant sweater and loose pants.

"I have been avoiding this conversation for a while now and I just can't keep doing it."

My eyebrows drew together and my head tilted to the side, but I still nodded at Tom. My body moved aside and let him enter the bedroom.

"Nice bedroom you and Hal have here," Tom said looking around.

He then sat on the bed and I followed his actions.

"Is there something wrong?"

I really didn't want to talk about Hal, I feared that if I said his name tears wouldn't stop coming out of my eyes.

He sighed and stared at me with his brown eyes, "You were harnessed..."

I opened my mouth to respond, but  I wasn't able to form the correct words, I was in shock. He had seen my spikes lit up many times, but the topic was never discussed.

"Hal told me that you were with another group and that you were taken while you were with them, but I wanted to know some specific things."

Obviously, Hal told you everything, he can't keep anything to himself!

I took a deep breath and talked, "Y-you mean how they took it off?"

Tom nodded.

"My parents, t-they found me with a group of harnessed kids near an abandoned school. I don't know how they did it, but they got me out of there and took me into the woods," I smiled at the faint memory of my hardworking parents, "In there, my dad in desperation hit my harness with a rock. The harness just stopped glowing and somehow disconnected. My mother took it off and I miraculously woke up the next day," I explained briefly.

"I'm sorry," Tom told me and gave me a genuine hug which I responded.

"There's something else. My spikes haven't fallen off, but I don't have the abilities Rick or Ben have."

"That's weird," He took his hand to his chin as he thought, just like Hal did.

I sighed and I could feel as my eyes start getting wet. Not because of the questions Tom was asking, but because I didn't have Hal by my side.

"Hey," Tom smiled, "Only one more question and I'll be out of your hair."

I nodded and weakly smiled back.

"We didn't think you had spikes for this long, how-"

I cut him off, "When the other group rejected me, I was desperate, so I convinced my dad to cut them, so no one could see them through my cloth."
