I wake up to the bright sun shining into my room. Summer is almost here only 18 days until freedom. For once I smile a genuine smile and get up and continue my routine. I dress in a white tee shirt with a light blue shall and jeans. My hair is down and parted to the side, for once not in a ponytail and I am still wearing my sneakers. Today I get to see Nick finally. After looking in the mirror and actually being pretty happy with my appearance I walk downstairs to be greeted by the smell of eggs and bacon."Good morning sweetie!" My mom says in a happy tone as she flips the bacon. I walk over to her as she hands me my plate and smiles.
"What's all this about?" I ask her stuffing my face with bacon.
"Can't I just make a great breakfast for my children?" She questions in a very high tone of voice.
"Just say it." I deadpan staring at her while eating my eggs. She sighs and turns around to face me at the counter.
"We found a school that we think you would rather go to. Only for the summer though and then you would be back." She rambles. All I can do is hold up my spoon full of eggs in complete stillness.
"What!" I say dropping the spoon on my plate. My mom jumps at the sudden action and then heaves a sigh.
"We think you would really like this school. Its for what you want to do." She says mindlessly taking a sip of her coffee.
"No mom. I just want to relax for the summer and actually not tear my hair out on more school work." I say finally scraping the last of what was on my plate.
"Are you sure that's the reason?" She asks me in a questionable tone as a mischievous grin spreads across her face.
"Why else would I want to stay?" I ask her unaware of why she doubted me.
"Oh you know you have been getting pretty close to the new neighbors lately." She adds while walking away slowly and a smirk across her face.
"Oh be quiet, I finally found a friend that understands me." I reply
"Well see about that." She silently says to herself. Only she forgot I have great hearing.
"Ok well on that note I'm going to go and start heading to school." I say swinging my backpack over me.
"Ok see you after school honey!" My mom yells at me as I shut the door.
The door closes behind me and I am greeted by the sweet smell of summer air. Only it doesn't feel like summer yet. To me it still feels like the beginning of school. And I don't want to be reminded of that. At the beginning of school everyone was starting to get really mean, thankfully it stopped after a while but still the times they were mean were horrific. Nerds were bullied and popular's rose. I was classified as a nerd of coarse. Things were said and battles were made, that's all I can say.
"Hey neighbor." Thomas says as he skips to catch up to me. He smiles with that goofy grin and looks at me with those deep brown eyes that make me melt.
"Hey, so one question I forgot to ask you. Why did you transfer here if there was only like 30 days left?" I ask out of the blue. He pauses for a moment almost unsure of what to say.
"My mom didn't really like the other school and thought that we needed to get the jitters out before next year." He says a little slow while looking at the ground. I know something's up but I don't want to push him. It seems like he doesn't want to talk about it so I'll let him decide when he wants to tell me.
"Ok are you excited that we only have 18 days left?" I ask trying to change the mood.
"Oh am I. School is like a prison to me, they force you to be there at certain amounts of time and expect you to be a completely different person than you already are." He says it like he's reading it straight out of a poetry book. His eyes stay trained on the sidewalk as we approach the school. I can understand him in more ways than one. At school I try to be a completely different person than I know I am. Instead of a needy girl that just wants to be loved for who she is and a big baby I try to be the confident one who is the nerd and the athlete. Though some of me slips out, I truly like to be the nerd and I am truly and athlete so some of the things are true. Through it all I just try to be a caring friend and make sure my school work is done.
