Chapter Twelve

Chloe approached the glass case that housed the Helmet of Nabu. It might not recognise her in this universe but then again, given it's unique abilities, it might.

"I know it's been a few years and an alternate dimension or two but I'm hoping you can see past that, because I need your help to bring Clark back."

One of the reasons she had faked her own death was because the helmet had been calling to her ever since she'd first put it on. She knew it would eventually drive her insane and she knew she couldn't subject Oliver to that.

She didn't relish the prospect of putting it on again but she didn't have a lot of choice. Without super powers, there was no way Carrie could defeat Clark Luthor and send him home.

She opened the case and held the helmet in her hands. She could hear it whispering to her. It did recognise her, it did want her to wear it, it did want to help her.

She placed it on her head and felt the power surge through her. She could see so many things, so many possibilities, so many destinies. She tried to focus on Clark Kent's fate, to see what needed to be done to bring him back.

She saw the mirror box, she saw Clark Luthor destroying it so he couldn't be sent back, she saw the world she now called home reduced to wrack and ruin.

She teleported into the Museum vault that Lex had donated most of Lionel's relics to, and retrieved the Mirror Box before Clark could find it, but the future didn't change because Clark Luthor would never willingly return himself to his own world, he had to be made to return.

She looked into Clark's future again and saw the Kent's being tortured, saw them being killed. She teleported to the Kent farm but she was too late to stop the torture.

Carrie could see both Jonathan and Martha were tied to posts out in the barn, they both looked badly hurt and Jonathan was almost unconscious.

"How does Chloe know where I'm from!" Clark yelled. He bent down over Jonathan and his tone now became soft and soothing. "You might as well tell me, it's not like she can actually hurt me so where is the harm?"

"If she can't hurt you, why are you so interested in her,"Martha said, trying to draw him away from Jonathan.

"Lionel taught me to cover all my bases. You two aren't a real threat either, but you know too much and that's why you have to die. Just tell me what I want and I'll make sure it's nice and quick."

"Clark!" Carrie yelled. With the helmet on her voice was distorted.

Clark turned too face her where she stood in the doorway. He laughed.

"Whoa! Nice costume."

"Let them go."

"Or you'll do what, trick or treat me to death?" He laughed again. "You have no idea who you're dealing with, little girl, so go home before someone gets hurt."

"Someone will get hurt, Clark. You."

She ran at him, grabbing hold of him and teleporting them both away from the Kents. They reappeared in a field outside of the town limits, where no one could be hurt by their altercation.

"It's time for you to go home," she told him.

Clark looked slightly shocked.

"How did you do that?" he asked. "Who are you."

"The mantle I wear is that of Doctor Fate. "

"And under that mask? Who are you really?"

"You know me as Chloe Sullivan, though in this universe I have a different name."
