Chapter 10
“Alright, so what’s the plan?” I lifted my spoon to my mouth.
Mint Chocolate Chip is the best ice cream ever. Aside from Java Chip and Phish Food, of course.
“Well, I was thinking….” Mr. Henderson’s eyes danced between Damien and me.
Damien caught my eye and lifted an eyebrow, prompting me to shrug.
“You and Damien, I mean…you don’t have to,” Mr. Henderson was clearly having trouble revealing his idea.
“What?!” Damien and I exclaimed together.
“It’s very unlikely they will let Skye into the gang, or even allow her to be involved in the slightest. First, this gang consists, for the most part, of men. The exceptions being girlfriends, wives, and daughters.”
I was catching on now, and by the look of pure horror on Damien’s face, he was too.
“You want me to pretend to be her father!?”
Damien slammed his ice cream cup down, and Mr. Henderson began laughing. A deep, hearty laugh.
“No silly, I want you to pretend to be her boyfriend.”
Damien chuckled nervously, though he sounded pretty relieved. I nodded. Just then my phone went off. I apologized and answered the call.
“Hey Mary. What’s up?”
“Um, it’s kind of important. Can you be home soon?” She sounded sad.
“Of course. Be there in about fifteen minutes, okay?” I assured her.
“Alright, honey. See you then.” She hung up and Mr. Henderson and Damien looked up at me quizzically.
“You’re leaving?” Damien guessed.
I nodded, and slung my bag over my shoulder. I took one last bite of my ice cream and waved to Mr. Henderson.
“Bye, honey,” I ruffled Damien’s hair.
He groaned, “won’t this be fun.” A light sarcasm dusted the words, hiding any double meaning he may have intended.
“You know you’re excited,” I teased, before turning towards the door.
“Tomorrow I need you both at the bureau. This case is getting more and more urgent,” Mr. Henderson called after me.
“See you then!” I proceeded to my car uninterrupted, for once.
“Mary?” I called into the house.
She scrambled out of the kitchen and greeted me in the living room.
“Sit down, dear. This is kind of intense,” she steered me towards the couch.
I looked at her, half excited and half worried.
“Two couples want to adopt you,” she started.
I smiled brightly. Someone wanted me!
“Who?!” I exclaimed.
“Well, the first couple called in claiming they were related to you,” she looked at me.
“That’s weird,” I muttered under my breath.
“Even weirder? They were right.”
I gasped.
“How?!” I was shocked.
“You’re mom was adopted,” she looked at me for clarification.
I nodded.
“Her adopted parents died before my first birthday,” I added.
“Well, your mom’s birth mom finally found her, only to discover that she’s dead,” she glanced at me.
“Leading them to find out that she has a daughter, without a permanent home,” I finished.
“And they she wants to adopt you, as does her husband.”
“My grandfather?” I asked.
“No. She isn’t married to your mom’s dad, who’s dead by now.”
I nodded, “and the second couple?”
“Mark and I. Honey, we’d love for you to be part of our family,” she smiled, with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
