Chapter 4
“How old are you anyway, Phineas?” Lillian asked in a rather small voice.
“I’m nearing my two hundredth and ninety third year.”
Lillian gasped. “Bu-but how can that be? You don’t even look thirty.”
“Did you never notice that your parents always looked a lot younger then they said they were? With the use of some forms of magic, the aging process is slowed down but never entirely stopped. We are still mortal; our life expectancies are just slightly longer.”
Lillian ran the idea over in her mind and realized it might be true, her parents never looked to be in their forties as they said they were. Another question came straight to her mind, “Phineas, how did you know that I was in trouble? Please don’t tell me you’re an obsessed stalker or something. I don’t think I could deal with something like that right now.”
Phineas chuckled, “Don’t flatter yourself Lillian. It was actually your brother that called me asking for the favour I owed him.”
“How do you know my brother?”
“After your parent’s death, Felix and I got acquainted since he had no one to guide him in the ways of magic anymore and since I owe your parents my life I helped him out in whatever ways I could. Your brother’s a good man.”
Lillian sat staring at the inside of her mug and felt the frustration build inside her “I always knew there were a lot of things kept hidden from me but I can’t believe my own brother would keep something this big away from me for so long.” She said to herself “. How could he be that selfish?” Lillian could feel her throat tighten as if holding in a yawn-the same feeling you get when you’re fighting back tears.
“Lillian you must understand, the world of magic was obviously kept from you for your own safety.”
“I’m just so confused. It feels like I’m just dreaming and soon I’m just going to wake up.”
“That’s understandable. Finding out all of these things must be overwhelming but you deserved the truth even though it’s not me you should have been hearing it from.”
“I suppose I appreciate that. “
“Well love, I must be off. I have places to go and people to see. I’ll send someone round to collect those bodies soon enough.”
“What? You must be kidding. What if more men come back here for me?”
“Ah well then, I suppose you should find yourself a nice closet or wardrobe to hide in. I’m sure you’ll find something suitable.”
“Oh no, there is no chance in hell of me staying here. You’re going to take me with you.”
“And why on earth would I do that?”
“Well I have something’s you don’t have.”
“Ah and what might they be?”
“Outstanding good looks and the wit to match.”
Phineas smirked, “I suppose I probably should take you along for safe keeping, I don’t even want to think about all the mischief you would get into if I left; I don’t want to have to save your life yet again tonight.”
“I’m able to take care of myself, thank you very much.”
“Of course you are, just keep telling yourself that.”
Phineas turned and began walking towards the door leading into the hallway, just missing Lillian glare. Lillian whooshed herself slowly to the floor doing her best not to move too quickly as her stomach was still upset. As she reached the doorway she saw that Phineas was waiting there with one of his gloved hands held out for her to hold. Lillian glared at his palm but politely took it and he guided her around all the misplaced objects and they walked up the stairs together.
