"Do you have all your stuff sweetie?" Skai's mom asked. Skai's eyes flickered between the two suitcases "yeah, im all set mom" she responded. "Ok let me check to make sure you have your church clothes and your inhaler and all the stuff you'll need" does she really have to do this Skai wondered as she watched her mother crouch to check her suitcases
"Mom I'm 17, pretty sure I know how to pack my own clothes by now?" Skai mumbled "what was that sweetie?" Her mom questioned and Skai knew better than to repeat her previous sentiment she shook her head gently "nothing mother, carry on" she muttered before heading back up stairs to her bedroom.
She plopped on her bed and sat there staring at the ugly wall paper on her bedroom wall. Home experts would consider it a felony. It was an off-white colour with black and white cows all over it.
"Skaiii I'm ready !" Her mom yelled from downstairs. "Coming" she yelled back.
Skai soon came barelling down the stairs. Excitement coursing through her veins. She never got the chance to go out, it was always school to home then home to school and to top it all off her grandma wasn't as nagging and overprotective as her parents, her grandma would let her go out and meet people and take walks and just stroll around. Skai liked that kind of freedom. She grabbed her luggage and hauled them outside to her mother's mini-van."Skai!" Someone yelled. She turned to see her church friend and neighbour Jasper Blair. His twin Julie came out shortly after. Jasper always had a crush on Skai. She wasn't into him though, he was a year younger than her and he was always gawking over Harry Potter, which she hated.
"Oh hey Jasper, hey Julie" Skai said walking up to them. "You weren't gonna leave without saying goodbye now were you ?" Julie questioned. "'Course not! Come here you guys" Skai said. She hugged the two with great reluctance. Not that she hated them but they were annoying.
"Boy we're gonna miss you!" Jasper commented with his arms still tightly wrapped around Skai's upper body. "Jasper. Need. Air." Skai choked. He let go immediately "oh sorry" he said playing with her hair. She awkwardly moved away from him..."Jasper, umm you don't have to touch my hair" she informed him..."yeah you're being all weird" Julie added. He chuckled, then Skai spoke again, "besides guys I'll just be gone for a month" she said stuffing her hands in the pockets of her floral print dress. "I'll be back before you know it" she promised. The two nodded. Her mom soon came back out the house. "Ok now I'm ready. Oh hello there Jasper and Julie. " Skai's mom greeted. "Hi Mrs. Foster" the two said in unison "how's your mom?" She asked getting in the car "oh she's fine" Julie answered. "That's great, tell her hi for me and remind her about prayer meeting this Saturday"
"Will do ma'am" Julie answered again. "Alrighty then Skai let's go, bye kids, see you later" Skai's mom said. "Bye Mrs. Foster" the two said in unison. Skai said her last goodbye to her friends, hugged them then got in the car.
The car ride was silent for the most part. The only noise being the whooshing of the wind, the gospel music playing in the background, the ocasional humming sound coming from her mother and the drumming of her nails on the steering wheel whenever they got to a red light.
After a few hours they finally arrived at her grandma's place. Skai hopped out of the mini-van and ran into her grandmother's arms. "Nana!!!" She squealed as she smothered the short brown lady with love. Skai let go and stepped back. Her grandmother smiled warmly at her and squeezed her shoulders. "Skai! Look at you! You've gotten so big, goodness!" She exclaimed. Skai giggled "how are you Nana?" "Oh I'm fine darling why don't you guys come on inside" her grandma said. "Ill go grab Skai's bags first" Skai's mom said walking back to the car.
She came inside shortly after with two suitcases. "Skai you should take your bags up to your room" her grandma suggested. Skai simply nodded and hauled the suitcases up the staircase as she hummed happily.
Once infront of her bedroom door, she pushed the door open. It was beautiful. Though she was here every summer she just never got used to how different it was from her room. The room was painted in white with a queen sized bed, a large walk in closet and a bathroom. There was a desktop in the corner and a flat screen TV on the wall before her bed. There was a beautiful zebra print carpet beneath the bed. It was kind of ordinary to any other kid who lived around here, but it was beautiful to Skai. She had ugly wall papers in her room with a bed that made noise everytime you moved. In the back of her mind, she always thought that her parents purposely got that bed for her so she wouldn't try to sneak out because the bed was too noisy, not that she had ever tried to sneak out before but her parents were the king and queen of taking precaution. Their overprotective behavior only intensified when they took classes on good parenting.
Skai set her luggage in a corner in the room. "Skai! Come down here" her mother called. "Coming" she yelled back before jogging down the stairs. "I'm gonna head on home now dear, your dad is probably on his way back from work by now so I just wanted to say bye and I'll miss you" she pulled Skai into a warm loving hug. "I love you mom and I'm gonna miss you too" Skai spoke softly in the crook of her mother's neck. "If you need anything grandma has a house phone okay?" "Yeah I know" said Skai. "K guess I'll be leaving now, ma' I'll be calling to check on Skai" her grandmother came out of the kitchen dusting her hands off in a towel, "yeah sure thing" they all hugged one last time before her mother left. Skai sat by the window in the living room and watched as her mother's car disappeared into the distance.
"Skai, honey, I know you just got here and all but I'm baking your favourite cookies and I'm all out of hazlenut and colouring...could you run down to the corner store and grab some for me ?" Her grandmother asked. Skai smiled happily, she didn't care what she was going to do but the fact that she was walking to get it, by herself, without being given pepper spray to go with she was excited to go "sure nana"
Skai walked into the store wearing the biggest smile on her face. She would ignore the stares she got from people. She hummed the tune of her favourite song from 'frozen' as she walked through the aisle. Once she had all she needed she reluctantly made her way to the cashier. Skai liked her grandma's house but she loved the store even more and once you've cashed your groceries that meant you had to leave. She didn't want to leave.
Skai bumped into someone. A guy. "I'm sooo sorry" she mumbled picking up the flyers she knocked out of mystery guy's hands. "Here you go sorry agai-" her eyes had finally met his. His beautiful blue eyes and how they made him look intense. Sort of like a bad boy. His hair spiked in all directions. He wore a black leather jacket with probably way too many silver hanging things, black skinny jeans and black boots. She blushed a little, not enough for him to notice though. "You can let go of he flyers now" he said tugging at the flyers on which Skai had a firm grip. Her cheeks flushed a little and she looked down, finally letting go. "Sorry" she mumbled under her breath. He handed her a flyer " you seem old enough what's your name?" Old enough ? What did he mean old enough? Old enough for what ? "Actually I'm not ready to engage in sexual activity. It is for married folk. And married folk only. Now if you'll excuse me" Skai snapped. "Umm I was talking about the party, the one on the flyer I just gave you" he said. She looked down at it. "Shoot! Im such an idiot" she thought out loud, "yeah, probably, anyway whats your name?" He asked. Are guys here always this blunt, the guys back at Skai's school think she's cute but would never dare make a , move on her and thats because of her parents. "M...my name?" She stuttered he arched an eyebrow "yeah your name you know, that thing our parents gave us when we were babies th- " she cut him off "right...uh it's Skai" "I'm David, hope to see you at the party Skai" he said before walking away with a wink.
