Chapter One:

It was a chilly, winter morning. The trees had become barren and snow had already piled up in the driveways.

I sat outside my foster house, looking at my surroundings. Taking them in. Making them a memory. The children having a snowball fight. Some families making snowmen. The little boys and girls playing in the red slide- giving the whole scene a color splash.

I felt a slight tickle on my cheek. I looked up and saw that it had began to snow. I smiled as a snow flake fell on my lips. It melted into cold liquid.

I closed my eyes and let the beauty of life soaked the warmth in to me. I put my headphones on as I leaned my head against the rusty, railing of the stairs. Crashing by Gersey started playing. My lips formed into a smile, as I listened to the beautiful melody. If I could, I would have danced now.

I was taken out of my thoughts by the rush of air in front of my face. I opened my eyes to meet the most beautiful green eyes of my best friend Lyla’s. She had a teasing smile on her face as she looked at me.

“What?” I asked.

“Dreaming again, huh?” she stated, rather asked. I chuckled at her.

“You know me.”

She smiled at me while giving me her hand to get me up.

“Come on. We are going to go to the doctor now. Or did you forget it this time too?” She asked teasingly. Sticking my tongue out at her, I felt something cold drop on to it. Another snowflake. I tried looking at my tongue cross- eyed, trying to catch a glimpse the snowflake. After a while of trying, I gave up and decided to just swallow it.

“Beautiful morning, eh?” I heard Jules say as he came to the rear of our views. I saw Lyla grin as he came towards us.

“You don’t even know.” Lyla said, as Jules approached closer to her, a little breathless. Once Jules was near enough, he kissed her in the lips while smiling the whole time. Jules and Lyla have been together for over a year now, and they are inseparable. I smiled at them, pushing in the little green monster daring to come up. A while later, the kiss started getting kind of heavy.

“Uh, guys. I am here you know.”  I said, a little panicked. They pulled away almost immediately, both of them blushing furiously.

“Sorry.” they both said in unison. They turned to look at each other, grinning like love- sick fools. Oh, wait. They are lovesick fools.

“Come on. Let’s go before you both start making out in front of me again.” I said the last part, grimacing slightly. They snickered behind me as I walked past them.

“So, how are we going this time?” I ask, turning around while walking backwards.

“Careful Emma. We don’t want you falling this time too.” Jules said while coming towards me and grabbing me, making me stop. I scowled at them.

“Whatever.” I mutter under my breathe while brushing off Jules hand. I walk towards the bus stop with my hands inside my coat, trying to keep myself warm. I hear a sigh behind me as I slowed down my pace.

“Emma, I am sorry. You know I just want what’s best for you. We both do.” Jules said, sounding sincerely apologetic. Nevertheless, I was too angry to actually forgive them.

“Then, why don’t you just let me die.” I mutter under my breathe. Sadly, Jules heard that and grabbed me by the arm roughly, while turning me around, hurting me in the process.

“Ow! Jules, let go off me!” I yelled trying to get out of Jules grasp. I looked up to see Jules beyond furious, making me stop to struggle.

“How dare you say that? Do you think I am the kind of person who would just let you die like that? Just cause you want to die doesn’t mean I will let you die. I will do whatever I have to do to not let you die. Get it?” Jules spat, trying to control his voice from going louder. I looked at him, tears rimming my eyes. I turned my head away in shame. I felt tears fall as I looked down.

“I am sorry, Jules. But I just hate this. I hate all these stupid medications I have to take. I hate that I can never have a normal life like everyone else. I hate that I might die any time. I hate that I have a ticking bomb inside of me Jules. I hate it.” I said the last part looking at him in the eyes. His eyes softened a bit. He started wiping my tears away with his hand.

“You won’t die Emma. Okay? I will make sure you won’t die. You just have to keep fighting for us,alright?”

“That’s  it, Jules. I am sick and tired of fighting. I am sick and tired of fighting for everyone else. I don’t want to fight anymore Jules.” I said hopelessly. Jules decided to ignore whatever I said.

“It’s alright. Everything will be okay. We will help you go through this,” he said, while kissing my forehead. I closed my eyes. This is hopeless. We won’t go anywhere like this.

“Hey, we got to go. The bus is here.” I hear Lyla whisper with her voice slightly breaking in the process. Jules moves away from me and hovers his arms around Lyla and I while walking us to the bus. He pushes us in first while he gets in afterwards.

I smile at Mr. Harrison, the bus driver, as I get in. He is an old man with a balding head, long white beard and a big, fat belly, making him look a lot like Santa Claus. He is one of the bus drivers that have been here for a very long time. I have known him since I had moved in here-, which was approximately 13 years ago. I was only 5 years old when I moved to my foster home. My parents didn’t abandon me or anything like that- no, in fact, they loved me a lot, but every good thing has to end occasionally, right? Well, they did. They died. They were in a car accident and I, miraculously, was still alive after the car crash. I was known as the miracle baby. If they knew where I was now, they wouldn’t really call me a ‘miracle baby’ anymore.

With thoughts still swirling in my head, we had reached the hospital. One of the best in town too. Crazy huh? I am an orphan and I am battling cancer, but I can still afford to be treated in one of the best hospitals in town.

You know, before my parents died they weren’t poor. They were far from that. They were stinkin' rich. So, of course all their money was passed on to me. Also, since I am 18 now, I have full access to the money. I know, I know. I can move away from the foster house and settle in some other city, but I just got so attached to the place, I couldn’t leave even if I wanted to.

I had just gone through all the tests I needed and now we were all sitting in front of the doctor’s office, waiting for my turn. And just like always, my heart started  thumping slightly faster, my breathe hitched up and I felt slightly light headed because of all the thoughts in my head. I fringed my legs against the white, pearly tiles of the hospital’s floor while fumbling with my fingers.

My name was then called, my head doing an involuntary reaction to look up. I felt my palms becoming sweaty this time. I was panicking. I didn’t know what to expect when I got inside.

And I didn’t.
