Despite the little staring incident between me and the boy sitting next me, biology went by relatively fast. Much to my dismay these seats were our assigned seats for the rest of the year. I didn't really mind but I preferred the window seats to the aisle ones, but I guess it serves me right for coming in late. The bell signaled the end of our two hour 'introductory' lesson to biology and everyone practically sprinted out the door. I only had one lesson out of the way and already I couldn't wait for the day to end. I really hated days like this, where you feel drained long before the day has even begun. Sighing I made my way to the canteen since I missed breakfast this morning and texted the girls my whereabouts.
As soon as I entered the canteen my nose was hit with the delicious smell of freshly baked bread. Oh lord how I love bread! Any and every kind! It was my one and only weakness, I could devour an entire loaf of that doughy goodness by myself and still have room left for more. Thankfully I was blessed with an unnaturally fast metabolism, because at the rate I consumed bread it was a miracle I wasn't obese. With a big smile on my face I joined the queue and waited for my turn. I knew what I wanted long before the dinner lady could ask me and within a few short minutes I was sitting down with three massive croissants and a large caramel latte, waiting for Layla and Rachel to show up.
Halfway into my last croissant, there's a scrape on the wooden floors, and the chairs beside me are pulled up and both girls sit down.
"Sorry we're late." Rachel apologies as she sits down.
"Had to do a hijab check." Layla smiles sheepishly.
"I figured. I missed breakfast, so my priorities were elsewhere." I laugh swallowing the last bit of my delicious crossiant.
"It's not fair that you get to eat like a teenage boy and not put on a single pound! How on earth do you do it!? Layla aks in mock jealousy.
"Ah," I say, tapping a finger against my chin in mock-wonder, "The mysteries of the world." I smile teasingly.
Layla sticks at out her tongue at me before she gets up to get herself a drink.
"Real mature El-Yamri!" I yell her surname to her retreating back.
"I swear you guys are worse than a bunch of 10 year olds." Rachel says laughing.
"Well its not my fault she brings out my less mature side." I reply pouting.
"Kids these days." Rachel mutters.
"So how was psychology for you guys?" I ask her changing the subject.
"Meh. You know the usual boring introductory lesson." Rachel shrugs.
"Yup, tell me about it! I seriously think the first weeks lessons are a complete waste of time." I agree
"I know! How'd biology go for you?" She asks me
"Meh. You know the usual boring introductory lesson." I smile as I repeat her answer.
"Hardy, har, har." Rachel replies dryly.
Laughing I tell her "Seriously, it was the usual crap about what to expect for the rest of the year."
"Well I should go, I have maths next and its all the way in the science block. What do you have next period?" Rachel asks me
"I have an hour of study period," I say pointedly. She looks back at me eyebrows raised. "Which also translates as a free hour." I laugh
She snickers and flicks a crossaint crumb at me, sighing "Lucky you, Mondays are the only days where I have one study period all the way at 2pm."
"I'll see you at lunch." I tell her as she leaves.
