'I wish that I could be like the cool kids, 'cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.'

Echosmith "Cool Kids"

***Landon's POV***

Lia stared at her nails picking them, a habit which meant she was either nervous or that an outburst was coming. Assessing the situation now, I believe it was the former because dad was pacing back and forth in the kitchen glaring holes into our skulls. His dark hair was tousled as if he been running his hand through it and Lia discreetly tried to pull her dress down to a more proper length. Mom sat down across from us at the table, looking at dad occasionally gauging his reaction. As if finally deciding dad wasn't going to go first, he turned his tired gaze to us.

"Where were you guys tonight?"

"Why the in the hell are you dressed like that Amelia?" Dad growled. She stiffened next to me. "Do you have any idea how late it is? And you two have school tomorrow! This sneaking out of the manor crap is not going to become a routinely thing--"

"Galen. Calm down," mom advised in a tight voice rubbing his hand over his face and sighing softly. "You'll wake up the whole damn house." I noticed a small dark blond head peek in the entry way to the kitchen watching sneakily quiet. I held back a tiny smirk of endearment. Our eleven year old little brother had always been a curious creature even now when he was suppose to be in bed recovering from a bad cold. He caught my gaze and gave me a startled grin before he tried to hide out of sight but mom quickly turned to him. "To bed, Grayson. Now."

"It's not a big deal daddy, everyone was at the party, even Dylan--"

"Is probably getting a new one ripped by Lily right now. And if Dylan jumped off the bridge would you?!" Dad huffed and mom gaped at him before he burst out laughing looking much more awake now. My smile came instantaneously. Mom was really handsome when he smiled. His eyes light up and he grinned at dad struggling to get his composure back.

"Galen, you are aware of how much of a stereotypical scolding parent you sounded like right now right? I mean really, did you have to use the jumping off of the bridge example? Let's try to be a little original with parenting for our kids sake at least." Mom discreetly gave me a wink.

Dad blushed and muttered, "shut up Jeremy," before turning back to us. "My point is that sneaking out was unnecessary and stupid. What was so important that you had to go at this time of night?" Lia looked down at her lap and dad didn't miss the tell. "Amelia, if this is about a boy.."

"I'm not a kid anymore! Stop treating me like one!" Lia stood up and stared at dad defiantly. "I went to a party and I had fun. That's all. If you'd stop smothering us maybe we wouldn't feel the need to sneak out. And I'm not like how you were at my age dad! Learn the difference. I won't just have sex with anyone whose convenient! I am not a whore." Dad's face paled and he was completely quiet as if he had no idea what to say but the look on his face made me uncomfortable. Lia went too far. We shared a look and I knew she agreed by the guilt written all over her expression. "Daddy.."

Mom rose quickly and strode over to her, his face furious. "Amelia Marie! How dare you talk to your father that way! You are fucking grounded for a month! Go to your room young lady!" Lia ducked her head and raced upstairs in a blur. Mom rarely yelled at us, just at everyone else, so I could tell he was really mad. Dad was still frozen, staring at the spot Lia was standing and mom touched his shoulder gently, his face concerned. "Galen..she didn't mean that."

Dad shook his head and smiled in a way that made mom frown. "She's right. She's absolutely nothing like me. Thank the Goddess for small blessings right?" And with that he left the room leaving just mom and I alone. Mom met my gaze and sighed.

"Landon, I know you were looking after your sister and I appreciate that. Just don't have her convince you to go out this late, bud. Especially if you don't want to. You gotta speak up and do and say what you want." He looked at me and waited for me to respond. I wasn't much of a talker but mom always had his way of getting me to.

"She didn't force me to go. I left on my own will. But I do understand the rules and I'm sorry I had you guys up this late and worried." Mom stared at me for a moment as if disappointed.

"Okay..just go to bed and don't do this again." Mom then stood up and went after dad leaving me alone in the kitchen.

I struggled to hold back my yawn as I slung my backpack over my shoulder making my way to Mr. Anderson's music class. I had just finished talking to the principal about this transfer- apparently I had been recommended by Mr. Anderson to take part of his more advance class since I showed promise. His words not mine. And I didn't mind taking a more challenging class. I could already play the piano, an assortment of guitars, and the drums. Mom had me get lessons once he found out about my love for music and he tried in vain to get Lia interested but she loved gymnastics and promptly joined the cheerleading squad this year. Mom supported her nonetheless and dad went to every game so far to see her cheer.

Lia was still bummed out about what happened late last night and hardly talked to me so I gave her the space she wanted. I knew everything would be okay if she apologized. It had to me. Our parents rarely got angry with us. They even called us their little miracles, though we were getting a bit too old for that. And they were right considering my mom gave birth to us and he's a man. It had to do with my dad's bloodline and an old curse that I won't get into right now. I approached the room and walked in without hesitation despite the class already being in session. Mr. Anderson blinked in surprise as he noticed his students attention was no longer his at the moment before turning to see me.

"Mr. Wolfson! It's great to see you!" He strode over to me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders giving them a friendly shake."Class, listen up, this is a special student of mine. Though he is a junior he has exceptional talent so he will be a part of this senior advance class for the rest of the year. I expect all of you to treat him well." I noticed a guy with scruffy brown hair roll his eyes but if Mr. Anderson saw, he gave no indication. "You can grab a seat," he grinned turned back to writing something on the board.

My eyes zeroed in on an empty seat in the back and I made my way to it avoiding unnecessary eye contact. As I sat down, I settled a notebook and pencils on my desk glancing at the board right before I felt someone poke me on the back of my neck. Stiffening as a reflex, I quickly grabbed the hand and turned only to see a familiar smile and light brown eyes.

"Hey," Nick grinned. "Landon, right?" I nodded briefly gazing at the hickeys scattered along his slender neck, his hair pulled back again though he seemed either unaware of them or wanted them on display. Either way, Lia was out of luck with this one.

He looked to be already taken.
