After Ms. Brander patted Jessalyn's back, helping her not to choke, they stood quiet. Jessalyn looked at the woman and child who sat next to her, most likely looking like a fish with her mouth opening and closing.

Jessalyn had no words. What was she supposed to say about her ex-best friend having a child? She wasn't disgusted or disappointed by it. Why would she be? Jessalyn isn't one to judge.

"So you're back in town for good?" Ms. Brander asked, breaking the awkward silence. Jessalyn closed her mouth and nodded.

"At least until I graduate. After… I don't really think… yeah, I might leave after high school." Jessalyn said nodding to herself.

There was no need for Jessalyn to be stuck in this little town. She doesn't turn 18 until next year, so she would have to stay until high school was done at least.

"Well, maybe coming back to town will be good for you. Seeing people you grew up with." Ms. Brander suggested. Elisa was looking at Jessalyn, staring at her. Her big brown eyes didn't blink and it was freaking Jessalyn out. "Ricky will be happy to see you."

"Yeah, okay." Jessalyn said sarcastically. Elisa just looked between Jessalyn and her grandmother. She moved and leaned into Ms. Brander and started to whisper something in her ear. When Ms. Brander nodded, the little girl jumped off her lap and walked away running to the playground.

"So are you going to the same high school?" Jessalyn nodded. "Well maybe Ricky can pick you up, take you to school. You know, you two can catch up."

Jessalyn looked at the woman, who looked so hopeful looking back at Jessalyn. Like she needed Jessalyn to see Ricky. Jessalyn was confused by it, and if she were her old self she would gladly agree to see her long lost best friend. But Jessalyn wasn't a suck-up anymore.

"I don't think that's a good idea. Ricky and I lost contact years ago. And yes we grew up together, but some things can't be forgotten." Jessalyn answered. She stood up and threw her empty coffee cup in the trash, shoving her hands in her sweat pants’ pockets.

"I don't know what happen between you two but the past is the past, don't you think?" Ms. Brander asked and Jessalyn just looked at her.

Should she tell her? Should she tell her that her son ditched his best friend on the day she lost her family, all for popularity? Yeah Ricky didn't know why she had to go to the hospital, but she looked worried when she asked for a ride. Didn't she? She vaguely remembered that day, but she did have tears in her eyes right? But of course Ricky didn't notice. He was too busy breaking Jessalyn's heart.

"I think the past sucks ass." Jessalyn answered. Ms. Brander let out a small gasp. "And I will really like not living in it or around it. So can you not tell Ricky I am in town, I will be grateful. Yes he will find out when school starts back up tomorrow, but I will deal with that when the time comes."

Ms. Brander just nodded, shock still on her face. But once she got over it she started to speak to Jessalyn, about everything other than Ricky and his baby’s mother (which Jessalyn preferred.) Or about Jessalyn's parents.
