There's always a better tomorrow

After cleaning the dishes I went back upstairs to the dormitory. I was basically the only teenager here. All my friends were adopted when we were kids. New kids came and old kids left but I stayed behind. It hurt to know that nobody wanted me, but in the course of time I got used to it.

"Hey Andrea?" I felt a tug on my pants.

"Yea Katy?" I asked the little girl who pulled me. She was sweet girl of 6 years old. She was the sweetest, cutest girl I had ever seen. She wore her short blonde hair in two ponytails, and she had cute baby blue eyes. These kids were the only thing I had closest to family.

"Can you sing a song for me. Today is my last night here. My new mommy and daddy are coming to get me tomorrow." She asked in a sweet voice

"yeah. Sure Katy. Just be a good girl and brush your teeth and change into your pyjamas. I'll be there in a minute sweetie." She smiled widely before running away, not before telling the other girls that I was going to sing for them today. They adored my voice. I was a pretty good singer if I say so myself. I always calmed myself down by singing to myself. I went over to my bed and pulled out the guitar which was underneath. This guitar was the only thing my parents left for me. They had bank shares too but I couldn't use them until I was officially an adult so this was all I had. I taught myself how to play seeing the tv and I had been playing for the past five years. My favourite singer and guitar player was Jenilia Thompson. She had attained great success at a very young age. The first time I saw her, she looked vaguely familiar, but I didn't stress on it much.

I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth and hair. After changing into my pyjamas I went back outside to see all the girls huddled up near my bed. I smiled at them and felt sad that one of them was going to leave the very next day. "Andy came", said Thomas a little boy of 7 years. He could never pronounce my name right so he settled on calling me Andy.

I plopped up my legs and sat on the bed as I started playing

"oh baby close your eyes and go to sleeeeep

Let the fairies come and conjure up your dreeeams

No matter how dark the sky is

No matter how much it rains

You'll always have me to show the light

Baby just hug me tight.

I'm never going to leave your side

So push all your worries aside

The night will always end

and the day will always come

with all new possibilities

and a really bright sun.

So baby what're you waiting for

Just close those pretty eyes

Tomorrow is gonna be nice

Push all your worries aside

I'm sitting right beside you

Just go to sleeeep

Just go to sleeeeep."

I finished the song. I looked around me to see every one asleep. Katy was sleeping on my lap and I could hear her light snores. The others were all huddled up on me too. I sighed before getting up careful not to wake anybody up as I slowly tiptoed to the shelf and placed the guitar next to my bed. Then I walked back to Katy's bed and placed a kiss on her forehead. "You're going to get a new family tomorrow baby. I hope they treat you well", I whispered. I sighed and took back my original position on the bed and went to sleep.

"Andy I can't find my socks" Katy whined from next to me.

"Don't worry sweetie, I'm sure mommy and daddy will get you new ones" I told her soothing her hair

"Andy, I'm really scared. Do you think my new mommy and daddy will like me. What if they don't like me?" Katy said in a mode of hyperventilation.

"They won't like you Katy." I told her in a serious tone

"They won't?" she asked with scared eyes.

"No. They'll love you" I said with a smile. "Now stop worrying and go check if your suitcases are packed, then I'll braid your hair okay?" I asked her.

"Okay. But Andy, one more thing.

"Now what?" I asked

""It's a secret. Bend down" I did as she said. She kissed me on the cheek and said "I'm going to miss you Andy." Tears filled my eyes as I looked back at her. I immediately wrapped my arms around her pulling her in for a hug.

"I'm going to miss you too Katy" I whispered.

"Katy darling, get down here" Mrs. Hall's sickly sweet voice interrupted us. It was the voice reserved for visitors. I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and gave Katy a little push, motioning her to go forward, while I picked up her suitcases and followed her. She hugged all the other kids and bid them good bye. All of us were in tears. This happened whenever anyone got adopted. We were like a really close family, so it seemed like a piece of us was being taken away every time someone left.

We then went down the stairs where Mrs. Hall was standing. She roughly smoothened Katy's frock and hair before putting on a fake smile and leading us to her office. Katy took a deep breath before finally going inside. I followed her inside to keep the suitcases.

"Oh come here, my little princess." A kind looking lady motioned to Katy.

"Our princess." The man next to her said with a smile.

The woman laughed before both of them bent down to hug Katy who looked like she was the happiest girl on the planet. She beamed at them, and looked towards me. I smiled back at her and gave her a thumbs up.

The parents then took her as her dad carried her suitcase after signing some final papers. She hugged me one last time before getting into the car. She then turned to look back and waved at me until she was out of sight. She had no idea how much I was going to miss her. A traitorous tear again dropped down my face as I whispered good bye. This wasn't the first time. But little did I know this was going to be the last.
