It was 3 PM, and we'd finally made it out of LA. Traffic was horrible today because of all the people that were driving home for Christmas. I'd sighed with relief when we finally passed the sign that indicated we'd left Los Angeles and I could see the clear highway ahead of us.
I took off my shoes and jacket, making myself comfortable for the long drive.
We sat in comfortable silence, Avi driving and me looking out of the window at the landscape we were passing. Every once in a while I'd throw a glance in his direction and I saw he did the same from the corner of my eye.
At some point I grew tired of Avi's music taste and I unbuckled my seatbelt to find my headphones that were in my bag in the back.
I plugged them into my phone and sighed with relief when I heard the intro of Lemonade. I saw Avi shaking his head at me from the corner of my eye but I ignored him and closed my eyes, losing myself in the music.
Another hour passed and nothing had changed, except for the fact that I'd tucked my feet under myself in an attempt at getting more comfortable.
I stared out of the window, pondering about today's events. I still couldn't really believe this was a thing that was happening. It felt so surreal, like I was stuck in a weird dream and I could wake up any second. I wondered what Avi's family would think when I showed up unannounced. I really hoped they'd be okay with me randomly showing up at their door. What if they wouldn't like me?
Fuck. I hadn't thought about that. I mean, they were the people Avi grew up with, and since he was the sweetest person alive they had to be nice.
I took of my headphones and put them down on the dashboard."Hey Avi?" I sounded kind of nervous, which wasn't too surprising.
"Yeah?"
"Are you sure your family is fine with me coming with you? I mean I've never met them and they were probably wanting to spend some quality time with their relatives but then I show up randomly and-"
"Don't worry," Avi interrupted me. "They'll be one hundred percent okay with it."
"You sure?" Wow I sounded like a child. Great job Mitch.
"Absolutely. Esther has done it before. She randomly showed up late and behind her was Darien. Everyone was confused at first, including me since she'd never told me she had a boyfriend, but ten minutes after she'd introduced him he was already in a deep conversation with my grandpa. So they'll love you too."
"But that's different, I mean I'm so awkward I can't hold a conversation for more than ten seconds. Plus, I'm not your boyfriend."
"What has that got to do with anything?" Avi questioned, staring straight ahead at the road.
"Well, you they have to be nice to them, since they mean so much to you, and with 'just friends' it doesn't work like that."
Avi just hummed and didn't say anything after that and we spent the next couple of hours in silence again, both doing our own thing.
It was only till the clock indicated that it was past 6 that Avi spoke up again.
"We should probably stop and eat soon, I'm getting kinda hungry from all this driving. What about you?"
I nodded. "Sounds good to me. It feels like we've been driving forever.
"
After twenty minutes of looking for someplace to eat we finally found a little diner on the side of the highway. It looked very cheap and tacky, but it seemed like the only place we were going to find and if Avi's stomach was any indication we couldn't drive much longer before he would start chewing on me or something. We got out of the car and as soon as we opened the door of the building we were met by a wave of hot air that smelled like things that had been deep-fried one too many times.
I looked over at Avi and saw him smiling already at the thought of food. Of course he would love this place, even if it smelled and looked like the inside of a deep-fryer.
The girl behind the counter looked up as we entered, her expression surprised. They probably didn't have a lot of customers these days, which I totally understood.
After we got seated in the nearest booth the girl approached us with a notepad ready in her hand. 'Debbie' her name tag read.
"Good night, welcome to Bob's diner, can I take your order?"
Avi answered first, giving me the time to scan the menu quickly. Good thing I wasn't eating vegan this month, since all the dishes had meat in them. I heard Avi order a cheeseburger menu, how surprising, and I decided on chicken with vegetables.
Avi had stopped talking then and I looked up to give my order but noticed 'Debbie' was still looking at Avi, leaning over just a little too far in a hopeless attempt at flirting. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and sigh loudly.
Avi, clueless guy, had no idea what was going on.I cleared my throat to get her attention and her gaze snapped to me, her expression a little irritated.
Someone's jealous.
