Just another senior year
My senior year was by far the BEST senior year any girl could ask for. It had amazing ups and some of the worst downs, but if given the chance I wouldn’t change a thing that happened. It all started the summer before…
Flashback:
Ring… Ring… Ring…
“Hello?” I said groggily into the phone. I glanced at the clock. 8:30 am. Who would be calling me this early?
“Eugina-Marie?” asked a familiar voice that at any other time I would be able to place.
“Yeah…?”
“Hey, its coach Thomas, I’m coming up to the High school this year to coach diving for the swim team and was wandering if you would be interested in it…”
“Diving?” I asked not comprehending what he was saying.
“Yes… as in what you did in middle school? Off a diving board…?”
“OH!!!” I said sitting upright in my bed. “I’m awake now.”
“EM are you alright?” coach asked chuckling.
“Shut up. I’m fine.” I said knowing he wouldn’t get offended. “So you’re coming up to the high school? Like to start the team again?” I asked hopefully.
“Yeah I figured since Daryyl-Anne is coming up there to swim, I would start the team back up for the school… god knows we could use the points. Every meet they don’t have diving they start with an 8 point deficit…”
“Coach, I know.” I said rolling my eyes,
“Oh right… so what do you think? Do I have a diver?”
“Duh. But what about Coach Zeiger?”
“What about him?”
“Well considering he’s the reason I stopped swimming, how is he going to feel when I come back to dive?”
*****Flashback*****
Coach Aaron Zeiger is the meanest and most judgmental coach I have ever met. I have swam since I was 4 years old. I had moved to Michigan when I was 9 and going into the fourth grade. When I got to middle school I was excited to hear about the swim team. I had missed competitive swimming. I went to practices and joined the team and had an amazing experience. Nothing was that different other than the new friends I made. When I got to high school I said hello to Coach Zeiger and everything seemed to be the same. I made it to captains practices and everything and did all of the workouts (they weren’t exactly easy for the beginning of the season). I did everything he asked without getting angry or mad. Eventually I started to get annoyed with him. He was getting frustrated at the point that I wasn’t an A swimmer yet. I was still stuck in the B lane. You see I didn’t particularly want to move to the A lane and get all of the stress and expectations that they were getting. I did swimming because I loved it. Purely for the fun. A week before school started I got fed up with coach pushing me and yelling at me so much that I yelled at him. Once I was done he looked at me and said one word.
“Leave” as he pointed at the door.
I glanced around and noticed that the A swimmers were staring at us with curious eyes. They clearly saw him pointing at the door but didn’t know what was going on. I grabbed my towel and headed for the locker room to change.
“I said leave.” He said in a sterner voice.
“I’m going to change and dry off.”
“I don’t care. Get out of my pool.”
“I’m going to go get my stuff your highness.” I said letting disdain fill my voice.
“Em. GET OUT OF MY POOL!” he yelled across the pool deck startling everyone but me.
I looked at him with rebellious eyes, and turned back towards the locker room. I got four steps when I felt a hand on my arm yanking me around. I looked back to see Coach Zeiger fuming. I looked him in the eye and then looked at his arm.
“DO. NOT. TOUCH. ME. EVER. AGAIN!” I said emphasizing ever. I pushed his hand off my arm and pushed him into the pool. I looked at the girls on my team and saw the looks of surprise I was getting from them. Before any of them could say anything I turned and stalked off to the bathroom not caring if coach ever came back up. I grabbed my stuff yanked on my sweats I had brought for after practice and left without so much as a second glance over my shoulder.
*****End of Flashback*****
“Em are you still there?” Coach Thomas asked.
“Huh? Oh yeah I’m still here. Sorry I was lost in thought. What were you saying?”
”Thinking about freshman year” he said without really asking.
“Yeah. Anyways. What about Zeiger?”
“I’ll deal with Zeiger. You just tell me if you want to do it?”
“Yeah I’ll do it. When does practice start?”
“Well captains’ practices start next week. Just go to them and see what happens. I won’t be there but D.A will be and so will Aaron and James.”
“James will be there?”
“Yeah he’s the assistant coach after all. Anyways go and talk to the girls and see who else might be interested in diving this year.”
“Ok.”
“Thanks Em.”
”Anytime Coach.”
“Oh and Em?” he said with a smile in his voice.
“Yeah?” I said a little fearful
“Practice is at 7.”
“Ughhhhhh!!!!” I yelled into the phone.
With that coach got off the phone and I knew my senior year was going to rock!
