Deeks followed Kensi into the living room, as she plonked herself onto the sofa, curling up into a ball. He took a seat next to her.
"Now to answer your question," she started, "It's just that the case we have now.. It triggered something. In my past. That I've buried down there."
Deeks cocked his head, staring intently into her eyes as she struggled to find the words to express herself.
"You know when my father died?" she asked, "And I slept on the streets?"
Deeks nodded.
Kensi took a shaky breath. "I fell down so hard, I felt as if the world was caving in on me. It was suffocating."
This plunged them back into silence.
"What happened?" Deeks asked slowly.
Kensi looked him dead in the eyes. "I sold my body."
It took a few seconds for Deeks to register the fact that she had been desperate enough to become a prostitute.
"Ha!" he said. "Hey, I'm not judging- you know I used to be a, um, dancer of sorts."
"And? How is this related in any way to the case?" he asked.
"The victim of the murder in question was a customer," she whispered.
"Oh," was all Deeks said.
Kensi concentrated on playing with a wisp of hair, deep in thought. Finally she cleared her throat and asked, "Well, what exactly are we doing for the case? Have we gotten any leads yet?"
A devilish glint passed Deeks' eyes. "No. But we are going undercover. Just you and me."
Deeks had a flashback to their first time undercover and tried to hide his excitement by rambling on and on and on and on.
"Uh, I'm not sure how awkward that would make, um, the given situation but.."
Kensi raised her eyebrows. "Count me in."
Deeks smiled.
Then he sniffed the air.
"What are you cooking that smells so delicious?" he asked finally, rubbing his hands through his hair.
"Spaghetti bolognese," Kensi smirked. "It'll be done in 10," she said, getting up from the couch.
Deeks followed. "Ya know now that we'll be undercover together again, I was thinking that we make it even more convincing," he tried.
Kensi smiled. "Real smooth," was all she said.
"Real smooth."
Deeks kicked himself. That was so totally not how he had played this out in his mind.
But it had worked.
