"No, turn right here. That's the main road, we're trying to avoid cars."
"Okay, left?"
"Um, yeah then take this into sixty-forth street, that should lead us to the bridge."
"Guys, I thi- think that he's up."
I opened my eyes. I was staring at a gray roof that was a bit torn and dirty. There was a bump and I shook a bit from it. We were moving. I didn't know how we were, but we were definitely in motion.
My head hurt. I felt like the pain would be the death of me. My vision was a bit blury and everything rocked back and forth. I was laying down. It took everything that I had to push myself up from my flat position. We were in a car. I took in my surroundings.
Everyone else was here. They all looked at me except for Connor who kept his eyes on the road. Okay, so I had woken up. Yes, thats right, I had woken up from some crazy dream. All was well and everything that had happened was all in my head. That's what I continued to try and enforce in my mind, but I realized that I was lying to myself as we continued driving.
I was in the back with Yoanna who was pushed up against the right side. Angie sat in the front trying to get as far from the door as she could, being half on the seat and half on the cup holder. We took a slow right, and I continued watching everyone stare back at me.
"Oh, sorry." I said pulling my feet closer to me that were pushing against Yoanna.
"You okay?"
"Um, I'm fine, just a headache." I lied. My stomach sank as I watched the window, seeing all of the things stumbling toward us. We weren't going fast by any means, but faster than them so they quickly faded out of view as we continued navigating the streets. So, it was true, Keith had died, along with most of the world.
There was this akward silence with the only sounds being the car humming as it drove. Connor was only fifteen so I was a bit suprised that he was able to handle the car with such ease.
"So, what happened?" I asked. They all looked at eachother, trying to decide who would answer.
"We got you, thankfully, suprised you were alive. It looked bad, but we got the ruble off of you. And Connor had his boyfriend's keys." Angie said. I was glad I was alive, but was living in this world any better?
"Yeah, thanks. But," I peered in front of me, toward Connor, "where are we going now?"
"Um, we were actually deciding that now." Connor finally spoke. I had no clue where to go. It had to be like this everywhere, so what difference would it make. I just wanted to go home, but it wouldn't be the home I was familiar with anymore.
"We could try to get our parents. They have to be worried sick." Yoanna said, basically reading my mind. I nodded. Angie didn't seem to have a problem with it, now it was just deciding who's parents to get. Where would we go first? My house was incidentally, the furthest from the school out of all of us. If I remember from the one time I've been to her house, Angie was the closest.
"Okay, so why don't we go to your house, Ang?" I suggested.
Connor slowed the car down waiting for the final verdict. I hear tapping, it was Angie's leg. Bouncing up and down rapidly as she contemplated whether or not we should go get her parents.
"...yeah...let's go." She finally let out. The car came back to life as Connor put it in drive. "Just, take this road for about ten minutes." She said pointing at the road. The road was crowded with cars. Connor's boyfriend's car came to a crawl as he tried to veer around each scattered vehicle. I made sure my door was locked as we drove past them.
