"Yep, that should be it!" Adrian said, cleaning up his books. I cleaned up mine, making sure not to leave any in his room as I packed my messenger bag.
"Thanks, Adrian." I say. "Hope you do well on the test tomorrow."
"You too." He gives me the peace sign as I walk out of his room and shut the door. The science test was a big end-of-the-quarter one. These books weren't going to make it all the way back to my dorm in this bag. There were too many.
Heading down the hallway, I hear some voices.
"He's down! He's down!" It was Maxine.
"Let's get out of here," A familiar voice says. I've heard her a few times. In the background of one of Max's calls.
A door slams and I hear sobbing as I approach the door to the stairs. "Man, this really hurts."
There lay Nathan Prescott, the basically deemed male version of Victoria Chase. He was hiding his eyes with his hands, and big red blotches covered his face. He was curled up in a fetal position."No more please, no more....." he started sobbing again.
"Nathan?" I ask, my voice curling to a higher pitch. Tears start to well in my eyes. Stop it, Charlotte. I know you care, but don't cry.
"Charlotte?" Nathan asks, uncovering his face. I see his eyes stained with tears, and one of them is slightly swelled shut.
"Oh god, Nathan." I run to him and clasp his head in my hands. He whimpers as I touch his face. My face contracts into a concerned look as I pick him up gently in bridal style. I walk down the hall with him. He's hard to hold, but I make enough effort to get in his room. I lay him down on his bed.
I start sniffling. Stupid hormones. I then start bawling. Tears expel from my eyes and I feel the wet substance as I hold my hands to my eyes.
"Charlotte.... please don't cry." he sniffles, trying to sit up but instead grasping his ribs and falling back to the soft mattress. "Why are you worried about me anyways? Everyone hates me."
"I don't." I say, lifting my head up. My mascara is on my hands. Darn it.
"Yeah, that's a big lie. Like...." his phone vibrates in his pocket.
"Oh, it's my backup." he says softly. "Those stupid girls took my main one....."
He reaches for it but I grab it instead. There's no passcode on it, probably because his main phone had a passcode. "There's a text from someone named M. Jefferson."
"No!" he cries. "Don't open...."
It's too late.I open it and read the heart wrenching words.
I found out about you murdering Rachel. Don't act like I'm dumb. You act like you know it all. You gave her an overdose, idiot. Come to the Dark Room. Your life is OVER.
"Nathan..." I say. "This guy...."
Then I realize he wasn't just "this guy". He was the photography teacher. How could I not know before?
"He's going to kill you...." I murmur.
Nathan sobs. "I knew it. Well, it's the least I deserve." He slowly tries to get up.
"Nathan, NO." I say. I go over and lay him back down. "Your not going to go get yourself killed."
He starts screaming at me and I hold my hands out, trying to calm him down. He starts cussing me out and grabs his shoe and throws it at me.
"GET OUT!" he screams as it collides with my face.
I fall to the ground, landing on my knee. My face slams into the soft carpet. I hear Nathan again, this time his voice is hoarse and sorrowful.
"This is why I don't deserve to be here. I hit my best friend."
Nathan's POV
As the words escape my mouth, I see myself sitting on the bed and calming down. I take breaths like my therapist said, and then out of nowhere I start to sob again. I have now acquired myself to the taste of salt as the tears run into my mouth.
Out of my peripheral vision, I see Charlotte getting up. She turns around and looks at me as I sob.
"I don't deserve to be your friend." I murmur.
Charlotte fills her face with determination and comes forward. I feel her soft lips on mine as she kisses me. she wraps her hands around my neck and we fall to the bed. After a few minutes, we break apart and she's staring at me, her face red. For once in my life, my frown creases into a smile.
"Please," she grabs my hand. "Don't go to this 'Dark Room'"
"I won't." I say. "I promise."
