Late Night Coffee

Scott and Mitch had been talking for hours at the coffee shop without even noticing. It wasn't until Kirstie had to interrupt them that they were made aware of how late it was.

"Hey guys, it's 11 PM and we closed at 10. I let you two stay while I closed up and cleaned, but I'm heading out now so.."

"Oh my gosh!" Scott exclaimed, "I'm sorry Kirst. I hadn't even noticed how late it was. We'll head out in a moment." He glanced at Mitch who nodded at Kirstie and nervously smiled.

"Alright, I'll give you two until 11:15!" Kirstie walked off again, resuming some cleaning.

"Wow, did you know it was so late?" Scott asked as he played with his empty coffee cup.

"I did not. I probably wouldn't still be here if I had known considering they closed an hour ago."

"Do you know how to talk to someone without so much sass?"

"Probably not. What fun would talking to me be without sass?"

"Not as fun, but still very fun. Probably enough to keep me here just as late."

Mitch smiled at me as he stood up to throw away both of our coffee cups no longer filled with the coffee we bought hours ago.

"So," Scott began, "Was this enough for me to earn your number?"

"No." Mitch stated. Scott frowned and tilted his head in confusion. "I want to leave it to fate. If we run into each other again, I will then give you my number. Until then, just know that I come here every Saturday morning around 11 AM." Mitch walked to the door and turned back to me as he opened it. "Bye Scotty."

Scott was very confused at Mitch's gesture. Had Mitch asked him out on another date by mentioning when he'd next be here? Why wouldn't Mitch give him his number if he was interested enough to 'ask him on another date?' Perhaps this was just an example of how Mitch had mentioned earlier that he was bad at asking people on dates.

Scott couldn't help but think about Mitch all week. Mitch was mysterious and it made Scott curious to learn more. Not only was Mitch mysterious in how he presented himself, but also in the color Scott associated with him. Mitch was red. Mitch was the thing to ever be red to Scott. Usually when Scott saw a color he knew what it meant about his view of the person. For example, Kirstie was turquoise and to him that meant she was a calming person to be around. She always would help him when he was stressed and keep him relaxed. His mom was Purple. Purple meant wisdom and royalty. His mom was the number one person he looked up to and he always went to her for advice. Mitch was red. Scott had no idea what red may mean to him, but he was ready to find out.

Scott felt that he was coming down with the flu by the time Wednesday rolled around. He felt miserable in general and standing up was a hard task, especially with his other symptoms. Unfortunately, he had a strong craving for coffee and a specific brew. He dragged himself out of the house wearing sweatpants, a snapback, and an old t-shirt. He always tried to dress nicely in public and prided himself in the effort he put into his appearance, but today, this would have to do.

"Hey Kirst." He mumbled as he approached the counter.

"Wow Scott, you look awful. Whats up?"

"Thanks, huge confidence boost." He rolled his eyes. "I think I have the flu."

She shook her head as she made coffee for another customer. She brought it back to the counter and shouted the name on the cup, smirking at Scott who now looked panicked. "Mitch!"

It wasn't the same Mitch as I had met earlier in the week, was it? Scott thought to himself. But of course, it was. Great, Mitch gets to see me when I look like sick, trash.

"Scott?"

"Oh, hey Mitch. Guess the whole 'fate' thing worked out because here we are again."
