The Realization

The realization dawned on me..

“What happens to me now, sir?”

He looked away, uncomfortably. He then spoke, slowly and gently.

“Amber.. until we get the necessary checks done, and forms filled out… you’ll have to return to your family. I’m sorry. “

Tears started streaming down my face. I looked at him with sad eyes, and softly whispered:

“Please.. please don’t make me go back there..”

He said “I’m sorry Amber, but right now, there’s nothing we can do. As much as I want to help you this very moment, I can’t. You’ll just have to wait for everything to be checked and evaluated, and then we can take action.”

“AND HOW LONG WILL THAT TAKE!?” I yelled angrily, not able to control my emotions.  “I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO HELP ME; I THOUGHT THAT WAS YOUR JOB!?” I collapsed into a heap on the floor; tired, weak and defeated. I sobbed quietly, and the officer looked at me with a guilty face.

I grasped the energy to pick myself up off the floor, I gave the police officer one last dejected look, and left the building.

Police Officers POV

I feel so bad.. I thought to myself, as I paced back and forth, looking at the hard floor where a young, misunderstood girl was just bawling her eyes out. And I can’t do anything about it… yet. I wanted to change this situation as soon as possible; it was like the guilt was eating away at my soul. I filed the report, and then started working on getting a search warrant for Amber’s house. I checked her parents’ criminal records; they astounded me. Both filled with minor and major offences of all different types. I started scanning through to find anything of the nature that Amber had told me they had done to her. In her father’s, I found several cases sexual harassment to young girls, the mother’s, physical abuse and violence. This was already incriminating.
