Helm of Darkness

"Why am I not surprised?" Percy grumbles, glaring down at me.

I feel like a misbehaving child being lectured by a parent. He even has that exasperated look in his eye as he walks circles around me. Jason is lounging in nearby chair with his feet propped up on the coffee table. Every few seconds, he stretches, lifting the hem of his shirt to reveal toned golden skin underneath. I can tell by the smirk on his face that it's intentional. It's also distracting.

"Do you realize you almost killed someone?" Percy yells, jerking me back to attention.

"He was the one who taunted me! He-he started it!" I argue, my tone becoming increasingly petulant.

"Oh he started it!" Percy repeats in a frustratingly whiney voice that's clearly meant to be me. "Too fucking bad. You can't just go around stabbing people."

"I didn't do it on purpose okay? He made me feel threatened... like I just defended myself okay? I didn't even realize I was about to kill him."

"You were actually about to kill him?" Percy demands.

I groan internally until Jason pipes up. "Lay off her man. We have bigger problems to deal with. You should get Chiron, call a meeting."

Percy sighs. "Can you swear to me you won't destroy anything without a babysitter?"

"Hey, I can't promise something like that." I shrug.

"Fine." he grumbles, snapping his fingers. "Then I'll just have to take you with me."

I look down at the watery chains that have formed around my wrists with chagrin. "No!" I wail. "Not these again."

"You said it yourself. You need a babysitter."

"Then get Grover to babysit me!" I protest.

"No. We need Grover. Anyways, he's a pushover and you'd be freed within seconds. Again." he grumbles, giving me a little tug.

I sign, resignedly getting to my feet. "Jackson? You know that one day you'll wake up with a knife in your back don't you?"

"Not if I get you first."

"Don't worry. You won't."

He narrows his eyes and jerks hard on the chain. "We'll see about that."

With that, he and Jason set off, heading straight for the Big House with me in tow. I realize that Chiron must be there and am positive he will petition for my freedom. I grin. Maybe if I'm lucky he'll lecture him too.

But once we arrive I see that no such thing will be happening. Pandemonium has erupted at the Big House with satyrs running amok, campers screaming at one another, and fires spontaneously erupting across the room. Clearly, everyone has lost their minds.

"STOP!" Percy bellows.

All the commotion in the room stops. For about a millisecond. Then people start throwing themselves at us, wailing and crying. With a peeved glare at the ceiling, the sprinklers go off. This time I join the initial shrieks as unexpectedly icy water pelts me from every direction. Miraculously, not a drop of water has landed on Percy. By the time the water has gone off, the noise in the room has diminished to almost nothing.

"Everyone sit down!" he commands, his voice carrying throughout the room.

Everyone is quick to obey, their asses all finding seats. Chiron is nowhere to be found, oddly enough. I glance curiously at the faces in the room. They all look scared out of their minds. I wish that I knew what was going on but it seems like to find out.

"I assume you all know what's going on." Percy says. Immediately, nervous chatter fills the room. "That wasn't an invitation to talk."

Someone stands. The angry girl who I met on my first day. Clarisse. "Is it true? Are the dead coming back to life?"

My head whips around to face Percy disbelievingly. He looks weary, pinching the bridge of his nose. "We can't confirm it 100% yet. But yes, that's what we think."

"How is that even possible?"

"Again, we're not totally sure yet but we assume Hades' reign is-fuck!" he suddenly yelps, releasing the grip on my watery chains.

A glance down reveals why. I just manage to catch a glimpse of the now icy chains before they shatter. But that's not even the strangest part. My hands are flickering. Actually flickering in and out of existence, leaving them slightly translucent. I look up in bewilderment to see that almost everyone in the room has shrunk away from me. And then I catch an eye of something. It's a helm, bobbing over my head.

"Hail Elise Hui," Percy says grimly. "Daughter of the King of the Underworld."
