Chapter 4

He sighed a bit, chuckling softly as he pet her hair, smiling, before bristling at the sound of large wings again, looking to the window before the ceiling.

She stiffened, looking at him with curious but slightly frightened eyes. "What was that?" she asked softly, clinging to him.

He stayed silent for a moment, before slowly relaxing with a huff. "The guy that bit me." he said simply as a rather loud thunk was heard at the side of the house, followed by several more much smaller thumps. Zaner suddenly laughed. "He still can't land worth a shit either. Neither can his bats." he muttered, still laughing a bit, reaching to pet her hair gently. "Don't worry. This guy's completely harmless. At least to girls anyway." he cooed, smiling sweetly as he huffed a bit. "He has a strict rule of not harming girls."

She stared for a moment before nodding,  nuzzling him a bit with a small smile. "So, this person... he's you're creator?"

"I guess..." he murmured. "And he's the reason I'm with you now." he said with a shrug. "You might want to thank him." he said with a small laugh, smiling a bit as well, looking up at the sound of the front door creaking open. "Oh, and he's a bit... Odd...." he added. "Of course, hey, he is nearly two thousand years old." he chuckled. "Pretty sure that'd make anyone a bit strange."

She huffed, giggling a bit though. "And how do you expect I 'thank' him? He might think I'm nuts." She looked down for a moment. "And you've seen how I act around strangers."

He sighed a bit. "Don't worry. He'll seem like your best cousin... Or uncle... Whatever... In a matter of minutes." he said with a smile, seeming completely relaxed as he pet her head lovingly, an encouraging smile on his face. "Plus, I'll be right here." he cooed.

"Zaner!!" a voice called, not really that big or deep, but certainly commanding as the sound of a cane occasionally blended with footsteps, before drowned out by mad barking and rattling from the boy in the basement. "HEY! Shush!" the voice commanded, the barking instantly ending with a whine before the footsteps got closer and closer.

Chloe whimpered a bit, shifting to be behind Zaner slightly as she held one of his arms rather tightly.

He made a noise, bringing up the blankets to her and holding her closer in a securing way. "It's okay, love." he whispered, kissing her softly before looking up at a soft knocking at the door. "It's open." he muttered, looking back to Chole with his soft, loving eyes. "Don't worry." he cooed, letting his fingers slide down the side of her face softly, before the door opened, a man standing straight and tall there, rather long black hair going down his shoulders as he twirled a cane idly, his eyes a piercing silver like Zaner's as he wore a cape with a red inside, it almost touching the ground as he had a big toothy smile set to his face.

Chloe stared with wide eyes, blinking a few times as she looked the stranger over, trying to calm herself and at least try to act a little braver.

Zaner still held her securely. "Is it that time of the decade again?" he asked with a soft laugh. The man simply nodded, before looking to Chloe, tilting his head as his smile faded in curiosity, looking at her eyes for a moment.

"Umm... Did I perhaps.... Bite you when I was drunk...? Because only the ones I bite have those eyes." he murmured, walking up to them, still looking at her curiously. Zaner suddenly started laughing a bit.

"Noooo Dislr, she's actually this way from me." he said. The man suddenly looked to him with wide eyes.

"Liar!" he boomed, standing up straight again as he'd hunched a bit. "I know you Zaner and you said you wouldn't bite another human after what happened to your brother!" he said. "I may be two thousand years old but I'm not senile."
