Cabrero, Alexander, aka Alex – Pierce’s cousin, her uncle Chris’s son; in New Pathways (D-wing) program; his mother ran away when he was very young and “worked somewhere you could only look up on the Internet if you were over eighteen”’; jet-black hair; raised by his grandmother. Dies in the Isla Huesos cemetery Book 2 but is revived by Pierce and John. Now has to live in the Underworld.
Cabrero, Carlos – Deborah Oliviera’s father, Pierce’s grandfather; friend of Richard Smith, with whom he shared interest in death deities; dead before beginning of Book 1; former IHHS track star.
Cabrero, Christopher, aka Chris – Pierce’s uncle, her mom’s younger brother; in jail for 16 years, just back and living with Grandma as of a month before Book 1 starts; recovering alcoholic who goes to meetings; visits his probation officer; enjoys Mountain Dew and the Weather Channel; is very nice to Pierce, with sweet smile, but “saddest eyes of anyone she’s ever met.” Chris was a star football player at IHHS.
Cabrero, Deborah, aka Mrs. Oliviera, aka Dr. Cabrero, aka Deb or Debbie –Pierce Oliviera’s mother; divorced Pierce’s father when he failed to notice that 15-year-old Pierce had fallen into the family’s pool in CT and drowned; just completed her PhD in wildlife ecology; after divorce, moved to FL with Pierce to further her research on roseate spoonbills; works at Isla Huesos Marine Institute; was born and raised on IHHS, and attended IHHS 20 years earlier; met Zack Oliviera at college. She used to date Seth Rector’s dad.
Cabrero, Grandma Angela – widow of Carlos, mom of Deb, grandma of Pierce and Alex; owns Knuts for Knitting; Chris and Alex Cabrero live with her; churchgoer; possessed by a Fury and able to put curses in knitting; former homecoming queen.
Oliviera, Deborah, nee Cabrero, aka Deb –Pierce Oliviera’s mother; divorced Pierce’s father when he failed to notice that 15-year-old Pierce had fallen into the family’s pool in CT; just completed her PhD in wildlife ecology; after divorce, moved her and Pierce to Isla Huesos FL to further her research on roseate spoonbills; works at Isla Huesos Marine Institute; was born and raised on Isla Huesos, and attended Isla Huesos High School 20 years earlier, where she dated Seth Rector’s father; met Zack Oliviera at college.
Oliviera, Pierce, aka Pierceyto Uncle Chris – permanent resident of the Underworld. 17 years old, long dark hair, brown eyes; kicked out of Westport Academy for Girls in CT in junior year; now moved to Isla Huesos with mother just before starting senior year; enrolled in New Pathways program for “problem” students. First met John Hayden in the Isla Huesos cemetery when she was seven and attending her grandfather’s funeral. Met him again when she died at age 15. Likes include John, animals, riding bikes, soda. Dislikes include her grandmother.
Oliviera, Zachary, aka Zack – Pierce’s father; CEO of one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the oil, gas, and military industries; Pierce’s mother divorces him because he hadn’t noticed that Pierce had fallen in pool when she was 15; met Deb in college. Likes: his wife and daughter. Dislikes: Pierce’s grandmother. Zack is a good guy underneath the bluster.
