There's blood on your lies
The sky's open wide
There is nowhere for you to hide
- Running With The Wolves by Aurora

I was halfway through Great Expectations and all the way through my third coffee. The park this time of day was quiet and even though it was eleven in the morning, kids were at school and most adults were at work. The occasional mom with her toddler would walk past or a business man with his ear attached to a phone and his hand attached to a brief case.

They paid no attention to me of course, no one notices someone sitting under a tree reading the heck out of a book that most people could just watch. But books were always better. Anyone with half a brain knew that. I had been to the Starbucks across the road twice now for a refill on my coffee. But I think I needed to ease up on the coffee otherwise I would be running around the blocks until dawn.

I flip the page and stopped reading. Something is happening around me and I know it's not rustling of leaves or someone walking their dog. My fingers deftly dog-ear the page and my eyes turn upwards to find four big school boys glaring down at me. I raise an eyebrow at them.
"Can I help you with something?" I say to them as I slowly close the book. Don't make any sudden movements, they might attack, I think to myself with a grin.

They big buffoons laugh like they've heard a dirty joke. The heavy book is closed but I don't put it down, they better watch their step or they're going to be carrying each other to the ER.
"Maybe you can answer a few questions for us" the leader asks and wipes his nose on the sleeve of his school jacket. Idiots probably wagged school to smoke poor quality weed.
"Fire away" I say lazily, the book held between my hands.

"Why the fuck you dressed for Halloween?" a chorus of chortles follows and I raise my brow at them. They think they're being funny. Standing up and leaning against the tree I watched the big twitchy idiots back up their mate.
"You know isn't that just such a coincidence because I was about to ask you the same question"

It took them a moment to get the joke and once they did they clenched their fists and the leader's smug grin dropped but he picked it back up like it didn't bother him.
"You think you're funny?" he snapped at me. I cracked my knuckles leisurely and shrugged my shoulders
"I don't think, pal. It's a fact"

It's fun pissing off people when they have nothing intelligent to say back to you. It's like dangling a piece of wool in front of a kitten and they can never quite get it.
"Hey dickhead you know that you're on our turf" the leader shouted at me like I was deaf. I gave a feigned surprised expression.

"Funny that, I don't see your name on it" I looked to my left and right and shrugged my shoulders again. The leader looked at his friends.
"Fellas I think it's time we teach Mr Halloween how to respect his superiors" he clicked his fingers and his goons stepped forward.
"Superiors, I hope you don't mean yourselves" I kept the book steady between my hands and waited till his friends were close.

"This is gonna hurt" a guy with a buzzcut smirked.
"It is...for you" that's when the book's spine connected with his nose and a loud crack was heard. The goon tripped backwards with his hand up to cradle his bloodied nose. His friend stepped forward and my fist connected with his stomach.
"Oi!" the leader yelled to me, I brought my head up just as he came flying in all guns blazing and his fists raised. I simply moved out of his way and he tripped on the tree roots and he face planted right by my feet.

"Did your mummy not teach you any manners?" I told him and kicked dirt into his mouth as his other two friends descended on me. A swift kick to a sacred place and a missing tooth later and all four were all practically weeping on the floor. A few bloody stains on the dirt and a white tooth the only evidence that I left behind.

Picking up my bag full of books and the empty coffee cups I began to walk away.
"You fuckwit!" the leader shouted in my direction. I turned on my heel and began walking backwards,
"Now, now there's no need to call yourself such a degrading name. Be sure to ice those cuts, boys"

I opened up 'Great Expectations' and saw that the spine had a large stain of blood on it, I pouted as I passed a bin,
"Look at that, you got it dirty" I said to no one and chucked the book out.
