In Korea so many myths and legends have been told over and over, for generations. But The legend of Jongyul & The Ghouls is something that is almost forbidden to speak of. They say it was one of the most darkest and evil times of all...
Boseong County has been known to be famous for it's green tea leaves but no one mentions anything about the disappearances that have occurred over the years but this time it seems like more and more are going missing.
The legend of these so called ghouls began a long time ago, it is said that these immortal beings were cannibalistic and preyed on humans. They killed without remorse but no one knows how they came to be, some say that they're demons from hell who came to this world to punish the evil doings of this world.
A man named Jongyul Kim, encountered these demons when he was traveling back to Boseong. He said that their eyes were as dark as the night with glowing pupils that were as red as blood, they didn't kill him because he offered them meat in exchange for his life. The ghouls had never eaten anything besides humans but regardless they took the man's word for it and ate the meat. Oddly enough they were satisfied and told Jongyul that if everyone in the village gave up a cow, ox or any other type of animal each week that they would stop feeding on humans but if they didn't...they would all be slaughtered.
Jongyul fled to the village and warned everyone but they claimed he was crazy, they called him delusional and they claimed there was no way he had escaped from the demons. They laughed and mocked him, he was shunned even kicked out of the village for making everyone go into a panic. He decided to go back to where he had encountered the dark beings.
The smell of a human brought them almost immediately.
"Why have you returned?"
"My village thinks I've gone crazy, they don't believe me."
"Don't believe you? Your own kind? Well isn't that unfortunate...but it still doesn't answer my question"
Jongyul himself didn't know why he did but he needed a good answer otherwise he'd be their next meal.
"I want to be spared" he said.
They all began to laugh.
"Spared? Why would we spare you? As if you're of any use to us"
"Because I'm a human. Other humans will not suspect of me if I led you from village to village."
"You plan to betray your kind? But why should we trust you?"
"Because all my life my kind have treated me like some sort of joke. I want them to respect me and if fear is the only way to gain it then so be it."
The leader of the dark immortal beings stepped forward, intrigued by his answer.
"You want to be one of us?" He asked.
Jongyul was afraid but revenge for their mockery and poor treatment seemed fair.
"I will serve you just as long as my life is spared and that I am never eaten"
"Are you sure this is the path you want to pick? Once you do there's no going back"
Jongyul looked at the army of beings but he had made up his mind.
He nodded.
"My name is Yong Byungchul and these are my ghouls"
They were clothed in black cloaks but their eyes were visible. They growled like wild animals wishing to take just one bite from Jongyul.
"Shall I refer to you as Master?" Jongyul asked.
"Bow down to me and when you rise again you will drink."
Jongyul wasn't sure what he meant by drink since he knew that these beings didn't partake in any human products.
He bowed down to Byungchul and swore his loyalty to the ghouls. When he was given permission to rise, a human skull was in Byungchul's hand.
"Drink, it is the key to immortality"
A substance the color of the deepest red color which looked almost black. Jongyul looked at Byungchul, he didn't want to drink. He wanted nothing to do with immortality...
"You will drink or die. You've sworn your loyalty to us. Therefore you must drink to become part of our pack, are you with us or against us?" He said.
"With you." He said as he took the skull in his hands.
And that was the beginning of Jongyul's nightmare.
He soon became the most powerful, blood thirsty, vile and most fearless ghoul of all. He was unstoppable, all the power had gone to his head. So much that he claimed more than half of Byungchul's pack.
He overthrew Byungchul and took his place as leader of the dark ones. Byungchul then sought out new recruits making humans turn into ghouls against their will, these new born ghouls would end Jongyul's reign of terror. He starved them for months and when the day came he let them lose where Jongyul and those who betrayed him were, he knew the whereabouts by following the scent of human blood.
Many human lives were lost as well as those of ghouls. Byungchul did not hold back, when all those who betrayed him were eaten by the new born ghouls it was a show down between Jongyul and Byungchul.
"It ends here"
"Maybe for you but not I, Byungchul together we could rule-"
"I don't share with anyone."
In the end Jongyul was defeated, Byungchul reclaimed his throne and disposed of the new born ghouls, they had done the dirty work. Only 10 of 80 ghouls survived but they had a new enemy now, The ghoul hunters. It didn't come down to a violent fight because Byungchul knew all too well that it would be the extinction of his kind. They came to an agreement, but were not allowed to ever leave the forest for if they did the deal was off and they'd all be killed on the spot.
The ghouls changed their diet from humans to animals. Some couldn't take not eating humans and left Boseong but those who stayed lived in the forest. Til this day they say that is where they reside, no one is allowed into the forest because those who enter never return.
