It was Christmas Eve and the family of three would be spending it in Indiana with Matt's parents and relatives.
"Daddy what are Grandpa and Grandma like?" Alexis asked. They didn't often visit his parents. The last time they had seen Alexis was when she was still in diapers and crawling across their old beige carpet.
Matt sighed. "Well, they've missed you" He said. He had a complicated relationship with his parents and often a few phone calls every year was enough to check on them and make sure everyone else in the family was well. Lea understood how hard coming home for the holidays was and he was only doing this for Alexis as she was getting older and began to wonder who her family was.
Lea held onto his hand as they stood at the door. Alexis knocked and giggled ready to go inside.
His parents opened the door and smiled eagerly at Alexis. "Hello little one" her grandpa said. He shaked Lea's hand and just nodded simply at Matthew. Things hadn't changed despite the time. "Come in" He guided them through the house. It hadn't changed since Matthew was a child. Everything was still in it's own place.
They headed towards the kitchen. "Mom" Matthew said loudly to get her attention. She was currently cooking some delicious food for them to enjoy. "Hello" She said without turning around.
"Is that my grandma?" Alexis whispered to her Dad.
"Yeah" He said. His relationship with his mom had been harder than any other. "Umm Mom, Alexis wants to say hi"
"Hi Grandma" Alexis was never normally shy, but right now she hid behind her dad's leg and only showed half her face. She could sense that her.
"You must be my granddaughter" She smiled for the first time since they arrived. "And Lea, lovely to see you again". Alexis waved and put up her arms so her dad would pick her up.
"Dinner will be ready soon. You're staying in your usual room." His mother said without any expression.
"Let's go put the bags away hey little monster" He threw her playfully over. Her laugh was contagious and filled the entire room. Lea followed behind them with one bag. Matthew was holding the suitcase with his spare arm as they walked up the stairs towards his old room.
Thankfully his mom had already taken down the teenage era of his walls. It was now just plain with two single beds in the middle and a mattress on the floor that had been set up for Alexis.
"Mom, Dad, why do you have separate beds?" Alexis asked confused.
"Well" Lea laughed, Matthew on the other hand didn't know what to say.
