The dinner was extremely awkward. Matthew stayed quiet and barely touched his food. Lea kept looking at him concerned. She'd never seen him this quiet before and quite frankly it worried her. He was different when he was home. He seemed sad and distant. It felt weird being that when she was with her family she was the happiest version of herself. her family were the key to her happiness and seeing him so distant and unconnected to his made her feel sad for him, not in a pity way but in a way that he was missing out.
"So Alexis do you do anything in your spare time?" her Granddad asked. he was munching on the dinner that was cooked by his wife as he asked his only grandchild. He wanted to get to know her.
She nodded happily. She hadn't quite understood the tension between the adults but knew when they were travelling home tomorrow she could ask them then what was wrong with her daddy and her grandparents. "I'm doing dance" she smiled happily. She had just passed her ballet and tap exam top of her class. Lea couldn't help but smile at their little star.
"Her teacher came up to me and asked if we'd considered sending her privately somewhere" Lea explained.
"Would you want that sweetie?" Her gran asked directly at Alexis. This was the first time the older women had spoken to her without it being a simple hello or sit here.
Alexis nodded to the question. "I love dance" was all she replied. She was only six years old after all.
"That's not really a good enough reason if your parents do this for you" she responded without thinking.
Matt sighed loudly to himself and looked over to see Lea biting her lip as if not to respond harshly to the comment about how they were raising their child. This issue was there's alone to handle, not hers. "Mom, it's not an issue with us. We just want Alexis to be happy" he cleared up.
"And you really think giving her everything she wants is a good way to raise her?" by this point lea had put her hand in matt's lap, stroking his hand softly trying to calm him down. She could see him getting angry and knew when he was honest his words would hurt.
"She's our daughter" He sternly replied letting his mother know her place on the topic. "Girls, if you've finished I think we'll head to bed. We have a long drive tomorrow" He asked. They both nodded quietly and excused themselves. Alexis went over to her grandpa and hugged him tightly and wished him sweet dreams, he bent down and kissed her cheek. She went over to her gran next and nervously hugged her before skipping off with her parents upstairs.
Once they were upstairs Matt sat down on the bed and sighed. He had hoped this trip would clear things up but it had only made him more frustrated than he was before.
"Matt, I'm sorry" Lea sat next to him, she could see the sadness in his eyes and the disappointment was like a scent in the air.
"It's okay" he replied quietly before capturing her lips. He needed her love more than anything right now.
"Right Alexis how do you fancy sleeping in this big bed all by yourself?" He offered. She giggled and excitedly climbed into after already changing into her pjs in the joinable bathroom.
"Babe, if Alexis is sleeping in one of the beds who is sleeping on the floor because..." Lea began to ask until he stopped her by pressing his fingers to her lips and pulled her into the remaining bed in front of him.
"Ohhh" she laughed and snuggled herself into his chest. She had missed his touch this trip and knew he needed her more than ever. Despite them being completely unphysical tonight they had never felt closer.
