Prologue
I set my bag down and plopped onto my bed. I had been so busy these days I could barely think. Maybe if I hadn't joined so many clubs and activities this year, I wouldn't be so tired. I blamed it on wanting to have the full on senior experience before I finally left high school, but of course I'd be lying. I just didn't want to stay home thinking of what could've been. I had to many what ifs in my life and I absolutely refused to stay home and ponder of different things that could've happened. Shit happens. Life moves on.
I sighed and reached to the back of my head, pulling the hair band that held tightly to my thick black hair. I ran my hands through the tangled mess. It was one of the days where I didn't straighten it out, and it stood in it's amazing wavy glory. I tried combing it with my fingers, but I soon quit when my tangles kept getting in the way.
The back of my head hit my pillow as I layed down, my legs sprawled out before me. I thought back on the past few years. Everything changed. I wasn't the same person I was before. I didn't even look the same. Of course, my facial features were the same, but my hair was different. My once light brown hair was now jet black, making my pale skin stand out even more than it already did. My green eyes were sometimes covered my pale blue contacts.
"Jasmine?"
I lifted my head making eye contact with my younger brother,"What do you want Ty?"
He rolled his eyes,"Mom says come down and eat."
"What are we having?"
"Hell knows, but come down."
I groaned and lifted myself from the bed. I saw that he was still standing there.
"Well, you can leave. I'm right behind you."
He smiled,"Fine. Just making sure you were coming."
I shook my head and followed him, closing the door behind me. We walked into the dining room, where my mom was setting down plates. I went over to her and kissed her cheek.
"Hey mom, what are we having?"
She smiled at me,"You're favorite, fried chicken and mashed potatoes."
"Thanks mom. That was really nice of you."
"Hush and sit down."
I laughed. I knew she didn't like it when we thanked her for what she gave us. She always said it was "her honor", whatever that meant. I did as she told me so and sat down next to my brother.
"Where's dad?" I asked.
He shrugged,"I think he's washing up."
I nodded and turned toward the door, expecting my dad to be coming out anytime soon. He did about five minutes later. He smiled at us and we smiled back.
"How was school?" he asked.
"Fine."
"Good."
He sighed,"That's always the answer."
I smiled,"School never changes dad."
He nodded,"True."
My mom came in from the kitchen and went over to my dad. She kissed his cheek and told him to sit down. She went back to the kitchen to get the rest of the food. I could feel and hear my stomach growling. I blushed when my dad turned to look at me, a smirk on his face.
"Hungry?"
"Shut up dad."
He laughed and continued teasing me. I was relieved when my mom brought the food. I dug in immediately, not caring about my table manners at the moment. I was in the middle of eating my food when my dad cleared his throat. I looked up at him, my eyes raised in question.
