For days she had been on this long arduous journey only stopping to rest, sleep or eat anything edible .From the very moment she commenced this journey and even still, she had thought herself mad. She had asked this one thing of Chokike, if she made it through this journey to get to the nearest village, she would remain eternally grateful and serve Him all her life. So far He had been faithful. She had spent nights with nothing but with the dark, forest animals, mosquitoes and sometimes thankfully with the moonlight, yet she had survived. She was not a good hunter yet, so she had fed mostly on fruits and vegetables. She could also light a fire, so she also enjoyed roast potatoes and yam. Fortunately too, she had not fallen ill but for how long would this continue? It would continue till she reached the next village, far away from hers. Away from an unbearably strict father, an indifferent mother, unfair laws and from Eyindah - yes, especially him, her first and only love.
Why did life have to be this unfair to her? They had been perfect for each other from the very first day they had met. He had proposed to her and brought her to his mother but she just went ballistic.
"How did you even manage to meet such a girl?" she had raved.
"Do you know what it means, you and her? Can you even compare your status to hers? It is a good thing you have not even suggested such to your father. Do you want it to grieve him or do you want him to disown you? Please take her away from here. I do not want to ever set my eyes on her!"
She had felt so insignificant and small after that incident but somehow, she felt his mother was right. His high standing in the village could not be compared to hers, therefore they were not meant to be. Still Eyindah had insisted that they would marry come what may. It touched her, it really did but she loved him too much to watch him forfeit his destiny just because of her. One day, she had made the decision to leave. Out of sight, out of mind. This way he would stop come looking for her and his mother would especially be glad. This brought her to this journey.
Eventually, the journey took its toll on her. She became tired and was tempted to give up. She knew she was close to a village but strangely more than ever, she wanted it all to finally end - this journey, her aching heart...her life. The sun was mercilessly scorching. She placed her hand on her neck, she had caught a fever. Her abdomen ached, her head ached, and her whole body ached. Perhaps, it was finally time for her to leave. Perhaps, Chokike had seen that she was heading into something worse. At least, she had been good in her own little way; she had not stolen or killed anybody. Her vision got blurry. She tried to hold on to something but she just slipped and fell to the ground. At last, she was peaceful.
