Each day, Wami came to check on us as well as give us food. Each time he asked what our decisions were. Each time I replied that I did not know while Obuike adamantly insisted on being released to get what was rightfully his. Each time our responses left Wami disappointed, then he would warn us that his covering up for us would not be for long. The others were getting suspicious and could not wait for Chikweri's return. Even I, myself got fed up with the whole thing.
I finally cried out in exasperation one day,
"Obuike for how long would this go on? We have been here in this dungeon for days!"
I noticed his face fall at my outburst but he managed to brace himself up and held my hands.
"I do not know but I know that all these would end soon. I believe Chokike would help us."
He looked so confident of this I could not say anything contrary.
Not long after, Wami came in to see us as usual. Unlike him, he looked so dishevelled and downcast.
"Word just got to us that Chikweri and Ebulu were killed few days ago," he announced gravely.
Silence followed at this news. I did not really know what to make of this. I was not sure if this meant good news or bad news for Obuike and I.
"By who?" Obuike asked breaking the silence.
"They say King Pere was behind it," Wami muttered bitterly. Then his eyes shone with wild anger.
"He fooled us all and broke his promise! He did not make Chikweri king neither did he hand over our power back to us! Now all four kingdoms are under him."
A bit of silence again before Obuike commented.
"I am not too surprised though. King Pere had never been one to trust."
Wami regarded him.
"Your Majesty."
Obuike's eyes widened in surprise. Wami had never called him that.
Wami continued," I believe you are the person we should have trusted. I know that if given the opportunity, you would restore us back our power and freedom. I just thought of a plan but I need your help. People think you are dead and this dampened your people's spirit. But if they know their king is alive and ready to fight back for what is rightfully yours, they would also be strengthened to help you fight against the king of Wakiri kingdom. I would gather my people and your people in secret as we did in the slave rebellion. I would tell them you are alive and want all of us to join the fight against king Pere. King Pere does not know you are still alive and hidden within the palace for that matter, so he would not be security conscious. On that day we attack, you would have to eliminate the king."
Obuike deliberated on this.
"Obuike, I think this is good plan. You had always wanted to fight for your land, this is it!" I put in.
Obuike nodded.
"Okay Wami, I agree to this plan."
"So do I have your word that if we succeed, the Ikwerres will get back their freedom?" Wami asked as if to be very sure, his eyes glittering with hope.
Obuike gave Wami a little amused smile, "Yes, you have my word."
Wami heaved a sigh of relief.
"Then I must leave now. Another battle has begun."
Wami left and once more, it was just the two of us.
"Oroma this is it. It is either we win now or lose forever," he said solemnly.
"We will win," I assured him, "The fact we are alive means we still have a chance. Chokike willing, we will win."
Obuike squeezed my hand tight.
"I believe you. I believe in Chokike..."
