Chapter 4. You first
"Marley is it?" she asked, not having looked up from her clipboard yet.
"Yep" I replied watching her write and tick things on the paper.
"Great, just ahh" she looked up stopping mid-sentence. I stood there awkwardly as her eyes stared into mine. Suddenly her eyes darted back down and she shook off what had her caught up.
"Um.. just follow me" she said before turning and gracefully weaving through those around us.
I watched her loose blonde waves twirl in the slight breeze as we walked, but after feeling like a bit of a creep I looked elsewhere.
The camp really was quite beautiful. Plenty of trees, the grass a healthy green, the cabins made out of wood for that outdoorsy effect. I made a mental note to explore the grounds more when I got the chance.
I'd lagged behind Ruby being caught up in the scenery, jogging over to the room she was now in front of. As she fumbled threw her bag for what I presumed were the keys I took my time admiring her.
Her skin was lightly tanned and her body slim, her hair fell just past her shoulders. With those beautiful hazel eyes and big pink lips I didn't think it was possible she was real.
Coming back to reality I saw she was struggling to open the door. Tensing my right arm I pushed against it, gesturing for her to go in.
"Th-thanks" she said quickly walking inside. I did the same, wondering what had her so distracted.
"If you'd like to take a seat, then we'll get started" she said fiddling with things in her bag. The room was small, it had two couches opposite each other, a coffee table in the middle, then just random paintings/posters and such on the wall.
After sitting down and checking out the room my attention was immediately drawn back to her.
She seemed so nervous, maybe uncomfortable. Was I making her uncomfortable?! But I didn't do anything did I? She might've seen me looking at her, or thinks I'm weird. But it's not my fault she's the most gorgeous girl I've ever met! How could I not look?
I suddenly felt very self-conscious, there's no way she'd go for me. She's probably the straightest thing to walk the planet!
My heart sank at that thought, further than I had expected. I quickly hid my disappointment though as she sat down on the other couch reading over something.
"Sessions go for an hour except for today so you get a chance to settle in, the alarm will go off and then you are free to leave" she explained, I was too busy thinking about us on the couch... You get where that's going.
"So why are you here Marley?" she asked looking up from the paper.
Brought back from the fantasy my defenses went up, I was getting sick of that question.
"You already know so why ask?" My tone was neither angry nor rude, but I averted my gaze not wanting eye contact.
"Why twice?" she continued.
"First time didn't work" I kept my eyes off hers as long as I could, but I felt as though I needed to see them.
Warmth filled me as we watched each other, not something that happens when I look at people.
I gave her a small smile, almost apologizing for being difficult. I could've sworn she blushed.
"Do you want to tell me about your family?"
"Not really" I chuckled.
"Do you want to tell me about your friends? School?" she asked, I shook my head 'no' but smiled so she didn't take offense.
I wanted to talk about her, just to know anything about her felt like it would make me happier.
"Can you tell me anything about you?"
"Aren't you a bit young to be a counselor?" I asked, basically ignoring her question.
"That's not how the sessions work" she giggled.
"Okay I'll tell you something about me for every time you tell me something about yourself, deal?" I wasn't sure if it was the fact her beauty put me in a trance, or her laugh made me melt but she had me intrigued.
An amused smile spread across her face as she put down the paper and pen.
"Okay deal" she agreed.
"You first" I added.
"I'm 18 and a voluntary counselor, I used to come here and wanted to help"
"I'm 17 and my dad sent me here" The usual anger that surfaced when I thought of my dad didn't appear, I was to drawn to Ruby to bother.
We kept going, stating whatever came into our heads. Never looking away from each other unless we laughed. Soon enough we came to more personal things.
"My first real kiss was when I was 15 with Matt Porter" she rolled her eyes and smiled thinking back. I childishly became jealous of this Matt.
"My first real kiss was when I was 14 with Chloe Willow" realizing what I said only after it came out.
"A girl?" she didn't seem disgusted or freaked out, completely normal actually.
"Yeah" I replied still waiting for a reaction.
"Was she cute?" she asked smiling.
"Yes she was" I laughed, I thought I had her worked out but she kept surprising me.
She went to say something but the alarm sounded, a frown crossed her face but faded quickly as she turned it off.
"Do I get to see you tomorrow?" I asked probably sounding a little to eager.
"Yep same time" she smiled.
I stood and awkwardly said goodbye, heading back to the cabin.
This girl had my heart fluttering! I couldn't stop smiling when I thought about her. Maybe she wasn't straight? But she didn't exactly imply she wasn't, then again she never said she was?
Frustration slowly filled me, I knew I was beginning to really like her.
God damn straight girls!
