40 years later-Shelly is 62 turning 63
Roshelle's POV
"Gramma Shelly, can you show us how to make GG's (Great Grandma's; Daisy's) famous apple crisp?" I chuckled and I, along with my two granddaughters who were 12-year-old twins, proceeded to make my mother's apple crisp.
"Now you see, darlings, when I was just a little girl my mom made apple crisp all the time. There was no doubt in the world that apple crisp was my favorite dessert ever! But when I was little I didn't call it apple crisp. I called it bopper crisp." We laughed and I added some quick-cooking oats into the mixture of butter, sugar, baking powder, and flour.
"Wanna taste some of the crumble?" They nodded eagerly. I gave them each small spoons and they dug out chunks of crumble.
"Not too much, now." I cautioned them. They nodded again, chewing happily. I spread the mixture evenly over the sliced apples in the pan. Patting it down with my hands, I listened as the girls chatted about their new house and how Uncle Trent had just married their best friend's sister, Gloria.
"Grams, have you seen Gloria? She looks awful gorgeous!" I grinned.
"Sure have, Lydie."
"If you had just stopped at awful that would have been something awfuller!" Her twin proclaimed with conviction.
"I would've never, ever stopped there! What kind of a person do you think I am?" She exclaimed, pretending to be hurt.
"One just like me, remember? We're like, twins??"
"But we're not identical twins. We are fraternal twins."
"Whatevers." I chuckled.
"You girls are too much! Now c'mon, let's finish this apple crisp up."
"Grams, can we bring some to GG and Gpa's house? I'm sure they'll love it!" They gave me the puppy eyes look. I rolled my eyes and nodded.
"Yay! We're going to see GG!" They whooped and hollered as they danced around the house. I put the finished apple crisp into the preheated oven and set my timer for 45 minutes. Apple crisp brings back so many good memories. Like at Kyle's and my wedding. After cutting the cake we cut the apple crisp that mom made. And all those family gatherings where my cousins and I would just eat apple crisp and nothing else.
"Hehe." I giggled slightly remembering the endless stomach aches that we had for hours after that. Ahh, baking, spending time with family and friends, these things never get old. Thank you Lord for all the precious years you have given me. It never gets old getting up every day and thanking you for all of it: the sun, my family, my home, and my life. Nope, it never gets old.
