Chapter 3: Flame

Lucy POV

I woke up with a sharp pain in my lower back. I got up and put myself in a sitting position, massaging the sore area.

That's bastard... just who does he think he is? Taking my bed and forcing me to sleep on the couch! But...

If I can get that key, then I can send him back to the spirit world and hide his key so he can't come into this world ever again. But that opens a different question: how did he get into this world before he was sent back 15 years ago? And who sent him there? If I could just find that mage's name...

I wonder if I ask him if he will tell me. Probably not, why would he help me research on his past?

I sighed loudly.

"Are you okay, Lucy?" asked Happy.

"Happy! Sorry did I wake you?"

"No, I've been awake for awhile. Natsu scares me."

Usually, Happy sleeps in my room on a mini hammock. But seeing as the room is occupied by a demon... I can understand why he's staying out here with me. Plus he probably would have been kicked out if he even tried.

"I wouldn't worry about him. He's probably harmless..." I say, not knowing if I was trying to comfort Happy or myself.

"How can you say that when he tried to kill you when you first met?!" he yelled at me.

I paused for a few seconds. Then-
"You're still upset that accepted his deal, aren't you?"

"If you can even call it a deal! Even if you do everything he says, he won't give you the key regardless of what he said!"

"..." I dipped my head and twiddled my thumbs, thinking of a response. "I'm not sure why I said yes, to be honest. Maybe I can find a way to trick him? But I don't even know how."

"..."

"..."

"I'm going to get some sleep," said Happy finally. "Night, Lucy."

"Goodnight, Happy."

Natsu POV

Humans are so gullible. Offer them a deal for something they want? They'd take it without thinking about anything that could go wrong.

I mean, I new that Lucy girl was stupid, but I didn't think she would do something that idiotic. I'm starting to take the phrase "dumb blond" seriously.

Not that I'm complaining or anything. I got that stupid human girl to play maid for a while. Plus I needed a place to crash for a while.

I shifted uncomfortably in the small bed. It's so hard to get some sleep when you have two huge wings on your back. Hmm... I could do it in the past, so why not now?

I sat up, and began to concentrate. Sure enough, when I opened my eyes, my demonic features were gone. If no one had seen me a few seconds ago, they would think I was human. This might be better if I'm going to be in the human world again.

I laid back down and stared at the ceiling. What now? I can't stay here too long or I'll die. I told Lucy that I stayed here for 400 years, which wasn't exactly false, but the circumstances weren't the same.

But I wonder how Leo did it. Is there some kind of trick? I can probably last as long as him if I find out how. Maybe even longer. Hmm... what if, no that's impossible. I can't change what she did.

Oh well, I've got time to figure it out. But what to do with the human girl...

Just having her do stuff for me would be boring. I think I saw a guild mark on her hand. I couldn't make out which one though. What if I could have her take me there? It would be s good chance to steer up some trouble; I need something fun to do.

I yawned. But before that, I need to get some shut eye. I closed my eyes and pulled the covers over me. Then the darkness of the night enveloped me.

Third Person POV

Lucy woke up as the light hit her eyes. But it that didn't make any sense. The couch was no where near a window.

She opened her eyes and found a light. A bright, but horrifying light. Fire.

"AHHHHHHH!!!" She scrambled off the couch and ran several meters away.

Wait, she thought. Where's Happy?

She stopped and turned around to look for her blue furred friend. But instead, she found Natsu with a flame hovering in his hand. Then he started laughing.

"You should have seen your face!" Natsu snickered. "It was so pathetic!"

He enclosed his hand on the flame and it extinguished.

"What? Cat got your tongue?" He said to Lucy.

"I- wha-" she stuttered. Finally she said "What happened to your appearance?"

"Oh this?" he said, gesturing to his body. "I have the ability to appear human or demon. I just thought this look might be better if I wanted to stay in the human world with out being caught."

Lucy gulped. "And the fire?"

"And what makes you think I'm going to tell you everything?"

"..." Lucy looked around the room once more. "Fine... but where's Happy? He was in here last night."

"Oh the cat?" asked Natsu. "He flew into the kitchen as soon as I woke up. He's completely terrified of me!" Then her laughed again.

Lucy clenched her fists. "Do you always think that other people's fear is funny?"

"Well, duh. Took you a while to figure out that one, didn't you, Luigi?"

"IT'S LUCY!!!"

This caused Natsu to laugh again.

"You may be the most entertain human I have ever met!" he said loudly. He bent over because was laughing so hard.

"This isn't even remotely funny!!"

Natsu stopped laughing.

"Oh? Then tell me, what could be more entertaining at the moment than this, miss know-it-all?"

"What? I..."

"You've got a guild mark don't you?" he said, pointing to Lucy's right hand. And there was indeed a guild emblem on her hand as he said. "What guild is that anyway?"

"That's the Fairy Tail emblem."

Both Natsu and Lucy turned their heads. And what they found was Happy, walking cautiously out of the kitchen. "But what do you-"

"Alright, I guess it's settled then," interrupted Natsu. "You both are going to take me there."
