Chapter 1

Waking up from an awful dream, I noticed something different in my room.  I went down stairs to the kitchen and on my way grabbed a pancake.

"Mom, where are all my Harry Potter books?" I asked her.

"Savannah, did I not tell you?" my mother closing the faucet.  She looked at me in a puzzled face like if she really thought I knew what was going on.

"Um, we'll discuss this during dinner with your father," she said with a nervous look in her face.  She waited for me to finish breakfast and finished the dishes.

As I ran up stairs, I heard my mom talking on the phone with my dad and heard their conversation.  Something about moving caught my ear.  My mom hung up and walked closer to the stairs as I ran to my room.

I thought to myself about this whole moving thing. What did she mean?  Did she mean just house, or school?  What if she meant city, or state, or even country?

The thing that surprised me was my books.  Why did Mom start packing my books first?  Where did she pack them?  Something in my mind was telling me this 'move' was not going to turn in my favor.

For the rest of the day all I could think of was the move. I had so many questions and thoughts running over my mind, I thought my brain was going to explode.  Mom had been busy the whole day that I couldn't ask her anything.

Dad had finally arrived home from work as I quickly walked down to the table and sat down for dinner. Mom definitely knew I was anxious to figure out what they had been planning.

"Hey Savannah," Dad said giving me a kiss on my forehead, " how was your day?" I immediately noticed Mom give Dad a deep look in his eyes.

"My day has been fine, thank you.  But Mom told me you and her had an important thing to tell me.  I found my bookshelf empty with my Harry Potter books missing.  What's going on?" I asked acting like if I knew nothing.

Dad told me to eat dinner first, and then he would tell me what they were hiding.  I ate dinner so fast my stomach began to hurt.  Mom and Dad kept giving each other these looks like if they were communicating with their eyes.

"Savannah, what we have been meaning to tell you these days is," Dad stopped talking and looked at Mom, then went on, "that we are moving to a whole new place.  It's an island called Jorvik.  Me and your mother have been negotiating with the owners of that island.  We are now working with them. This will give me and Mom a great business opportunity."

I didn't know what to say.  I mean, there wasn't a reason for me to hate this move.  I had no friends, i was a total geek, and Canada wasn't the place I wanted to stay my whole life.  In fact, I was surprisingly excited.

"Wow, we're moving to Jorvik!  How is Jorvik?  Fun, beautiful, cool?" I asked trying to figure out details anxiously.

"It's a beautiful admiring place!  Just one thing about it you should really know... Jorvik is like a horse palace.  As in only horses. Everything you will do there has everything to do with horses." after pausing, my Dad continued, "I already bought you a horse!"

"Wow, wait....... just horses?" I asked lowering my excitement. "I don't know anything about horses, though. You guys know I never had a thing for horses."

Mom and Dad knew I was right. I didn't have any experience with horses. It would take me years to get used to them and learn.

"Mom, I don't know what's really going on. Is this really happening?" I asked her with an upset look.

"Look Savannah, yes our lives are changing. But this is a great change. We can buy a better house. We'll have better jobs. And you can meet friends there. Believe me, from the riders I've heard from, they say your horse is going to be the best friend you can trust and love." Mom slowly explained about the change and new life we were about to experience. She especially continued to mention the 'new friends' thing.

I am seventeen years old, I can manage making friends here in Canada, I just never really wanted to. I'm like to think of me as independent.

"Mom, I love animals. But I love books even more. If we move to Jorvik, there will not be anything there that is ... really me. And what do my Harry Potter books have anything to do with this?" I reminded myself and asked.

"Well, your books were donated to a children hospitals. And before you yell, honey, you know them by memory. They probably want them more than you do. There is a library at Jorvik in this city, if I recall, it's called Manor. You need to visit the real world and go outside and enjoy life, make new friends. No more living in your room reading books and hiding from outdoors. No more laptops nor computer games. Honey, I want you to have fun in your life. Jorvik will be a huge change in your life. But it's going to be the best time you will ever have. I promise you that," my mom explained to me as I had a hard time accepting it.

"We go to Jorvik in two months. So if I were you, I would start getting ready for the move. These two months will go by really quick, believe me," my dad said. He seemed off for a bit while Mom was talking but then later came back to the conversation.

"What about school?" I asked. "I still need to finish learning."

"There is a school there and an academy for horse riding. You will be taking both." It seemed like Dad had been planning this a long time ago and had everything sorted out.

I got in bed and thought about it. Maybe I was just looking at the negatives. Jorvik might be the place that I have been waiting for. The place that will be the start of something new for me.
