CHAPTER 11: A Christmas To Remember

"Last checkup everyone, better look in the mirror while you still can!"

My parents are fumbling around the house getting ready for this dinner party. The scents of perfume and cologne are merged together throughout the living room, even the smell of my dad's casserole tries to find its way in my nostril but is outnumbered.

I'm the only sane person who's not running around like a panicking geese.

"Lauren where's my gold necklace?" My mom asked walking down the stairs with her 4th changed clothes tonight. She's now wearing a bold red cocktail dress with gold accessories and heels. It's kind of weird knowing that even your mother has a better fashion sense than you.

"They're on the living room table."

She rushes to get them and my dad enters fixing his red tie. He looked like a true gentleman (which he was) his tux made him look so professional and his gray hair adding to this affect, it was something I only see once every year and I always get emotional.

Both were now in front of me waiting for my approval and I couldn't stop smiling. "You guys look amazing."

They both let out a relieved sigh and we headed out.

I wasn't wearing anything special, just a red flared dress (which I thought was extremely short.) with a pair of UGGs -courtesy of my mother-

The winter breeze immediately hits me as I stepped outside. The sun was setting and it was getting dark. Dad opens the car door for mom and I.

*
"Okay we're here do I have to go over the rules one more time?" My mom ask for the 3rd time.

She's been reciting 'the rules' all throughout the ride, I swear I can say them in my sleep now.

"NO!" My dad and I shout in sync. Mom chuckles and began to exit the vehicle.

We follow suit and stop at the door.

"Lauren...smile please." My mom says this without eye contact I nod anyway.

With a deep breath I gave the most genuine smile I could think of. My dad knocks and the door immediately opened revealing Andrea with a smile as forced as mine. She shows disappointment in her eyes but she covers it up with a hand shake to my parents.

"Mr. And Mrs.Divine, it's great having you over. My parents are in the foyer greeting guest, but you're more than welcome to address yourself." She says cordially.

As my parents make themselves comfortable, I was so out of place. I'm looking around like I've never seen humans before and I'm breathing heavily. In seconds Andrea was already hosting other guest but not taking her eyes off the entrance.

Only rich people were here, even some of the rich kids from school are here. This place really never changes its still big and gives you this feeling which makes you feel so small. I'm used to it since this was basically my home when I was younger.

"Would you like something to drink?" Alfie's fake British accent spoke from behind. I'm internally smiling and all that had made me feel negative was erased.

"No kind sir, but I must say that you look absolutely gorgeous in that tuxedo." I respond turning around to face him.

"Thanks, now back to hosting. Since I don't want to leave you here by yourself, I saw Amy by the stairs." He got that all out in breathe and went back to talking to other guest.

I'm in a rush to find my best friend, I refuse to be in this hell hole looking like an incantation Andrea. Do you know what kind of guys are here? Pervy, stick up, blonde rich guys, the kind who has no pride and would have no problem using cheesy pick up lines to get in your pants.

As I was slowly looking concentration I ram right into a hard chest. I mentally curse my clumsiness and look at the person, then I mentally curse myself for running into the one person I prayed I wouldn't see until I was 38 years of age.

"Hey." He says with a bright smile. Like a really bright smile, I was just waiting for the little shiny reflection to show up on his teeth.

"Hi...Alex." Should've just ran away Lauren.

"You didn't return any of my calls."

"About that...uh, I was busy" Lies.

All day Alex was trying to either call me, texts or even fax me. Literally. With all that going on, I still managed to avoid him anyway possible.

"Oh..." He simply says rubbing the back of his neck.

We stood there without saying a word for what seemed like a six decades until Amy called me over.

"Um, excuse me, bestfriend duties." I said awkwardly then ran off.

Stupid, stupid Lauren.

"This party is a load of bologna." Amy complains. She continues to ramble about how much she hates the party and how April really just ruined her whole night.

I wasn't listening, my mind was just stuck on Alex, how kind he was last night and sweet, and how mean I must be to avoid him after that.
