Prologue
The Ending. The Beginning...
And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying: oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. It is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:
Zechariah 7
Michael stood at the prow of a large ship. He did not know much about ships or sailing, but this appeared to him to be the largest warship ever. It did not matter. It could have been ten times its size. It could have had ten times the number of men and ballista. It would not have mattered.
Michael squinted at the sun in his eyes. He looked over his left shoulder and marveled at the number of ships dotting the ocean. The white and red sails of Carthose’s charging bull blew in the steady breeze—an omen to the other Great Nations of Alexandria and Someri.
Carthose didn’t lose wars. In truth, they hadn’t lost much as a battle in generations and prided itself as being the most powerful of the “Three Great Nations.” Alexandria’s sky blue canvas with the golden twelve-pointed sunburst and another section of ships presenting the green, gold, and red of Someri—the other two nations were in equally as grand of a formation of numberless ships.
Michael tore his eyes from the astonishing sight before him. Other countries were represented as well. With their numbers, they may as well have not been there at all. They amounted to nothing compared to the awesome fleets from Carthose or its opponents in this war, Someri and Alexandria.
Michael paced the deck in contemplation about how to handle the impending conflict. He and his Haven refugees were caught between the forces. What to do? What to do?
Michael remembered his conversation with his master, Raphael and exhaled in frustration.
“You must leave Haven as quickly as possible.” Raphael had said. “Take every ship and fill them with the people of Haven.”
“What about you? Why are you sending me away? I can help.” Michael had asked.
Ignoring him Raphael went on. “Here are orders for the ship captains in the port.” He hurriedly shoved papers in Michael’s hands. “Take them and go quickly. There is little time left to escape. You must lead the people out of harm’s way on theWa Arekuruu Sea. There is not time to go by land. The armies of the three Great Nations surround us. Don’t ask questions, just go my boy, go.”
