Chapter 1

"Liz, can we have you down at the front office?” The lady on the intercom asked.

I grudgingly got up from my classroom and trudged down the hallway to the office. The office ladies, in their bright white dresses, smiled at me a little too brightly as I snatched the envelope on the desk and proceeded to read what the letter said. It was a calling. An angel calling. I smiled despite myself.

Rushing around my room with a stupid grin on my face, I grabbed what I would need. Resting on my bed, in a plastic Zip-Lock baggie, was my mission equipment, which basically included The Bible. My other things: some clothes, shoes, and toiletries were in a mixed up mess, which I finally succeeded in pressing into a small backpack. At last, I was ready to go. With a swipe of my exit card, I was off the Transport Center.

The Transport Center is huge. I’ve gotten lost in it quite a few times myself in the endless white rooms and halls. But this time, I got a map from the reception counter so I absolutely would not get lost. I walked to the elevator and clicked the floor six button labeled to the side: Earthly Transports. While I waited, I set my stuff on a metal counter. I stepped out of the elevator with my backpack when it binged, and walked forward.

I mangaged to get lost once again. I had forgotten the map in the elevator, but thankfully someone was patrolling the floor that I had ended up on, and directed me to the sixth floor. Before too long, I was looking at beautifully etched glass on the French doors before me that led to the Earthly Transports office. I pushed them open, and someone was waiting for me with their arm outstretched, gesturing to a white door.

My palms started sweating as I grabbed the handle. I turned the handle slowly and pulled the door open. When I looked out the door, my stomach lurched because there was only a rainbow connecting from where I was standing to the far away ground. I could make out the American continents below. I darted a look at the balding man who had folded his arms repectfully and he raised his eyebrows. With a gulp, I stepped onto the rainbow.

Walking down the rainbow road, I decided that it was the best way to get to earth after all. I could see the lands, ocean, cities rapidly appearing, and even the rays of light were visible. It brought memories back of my death, which I pushed to the back of my mind. Where the rainbow ended was a misty, half transparent building, which I entered.

Someone greeted me in the front lobby room, pulling me into a small room that held two metal chairs on opposite sides of a brown table, and a filing cabinet. He introduced himself as Brother Maverick.

“Hello Liz, and welcome to your calling. I hope you had a nice walk down here. Anyways, let’s get to business.” He said very fast, almost without a breath.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat while he took the other one. I never was good with talking to people who were older than me.

Brother Maverick ruffled through the filing cabinet, finding the paper he was looking for, and put on some reading glasses. “Eh hem… Let’s see. Ok Liz, you’ve been called to come to earth.”

No, I thought I was going to WaterWorld. I thought sarcastically.

“And you are going to help a girl named Amy. She’s not doing to well, if I understand correctly. She is currently inactive in the church, in tenth grade, and it’s just getting worse. You need to go to her, and do whatever you can to bring her back, and help her put her faith in God to get her through this tough time in her life, without giving away that you are an angel. Are you game?”

Game. I thought. Sure I can do this. I was about to open my mouth and say it but Brother Maverick said something first.

“Good, good, I’m sure you are. “ He smiled, and then added as a mumble, “Why is everyone that comes down here so quiet?”
