Everybody in the world has a talent.
No matter how big or small, everyone has something they're good at.
Some people can sing, dance, or draw real well. There were those people who used their talents for the better of society, and those who did not. The people who were excellent liars, cheaters, players, and smooth-talkers who used their talent to get away with everything. Life seemed like a game to them. It was something I never understood. The only thing I knew was, I never wanted to get involved with people like that.
I still remember saying those words to myself at the beginning of Grade 11. This year was supposed to be flaw-less, as long as I strayed away from those people everything would be fine.
I had the perfect bestfriend; Sunny. A girl taller than me, with bright red hair.
We had known each other ever since we were little, and despite our gender differences, we had been inseparable since Grade 3. We told each other everything, we knew each other's biggest fears, dreams and wishes. Most people expected us to start dating once we entered high school, but believe me when I say that I've never felt that way about Sunny...ever.
If I even mentioned dating she would punch me in the gut and call me a 'wussy'.
I don't think she's had a crush before, so I was overjoyed the moment she wanted to talk about it.
"I like him."
We were sitting on Sunny's back-porch on a mid-April evening. After one glance at her reddening face, I knew she was serious. And that moment I knew my flaw-less Grade 11 year was ruined.
The Him Sunny was referring to was none other than Drae Treval. Only one of the biggest smooth-talking players in the entire school. Just mentioning his name around a young girl could make her swoon. You'd think this would make him the envy of every boy in school, but they all seemed to be under his spell too. Drae was star-athlete, a member of almost every cool team our school had.
In retrospect, I should have seen this coming. All three of us had been in English last semester. (did I mention he also excelled in academics?) Sunny sat beside me the entire class, but I would always notice her sneaking peeks at the back of the classroom where Drae was sitting.
I thought she was smarter than this. Girls confessed to Drae all the time. And for some mysterious reason he would turn them down coldly.
Every.
Single.
Time.
This was the kind of person we were supposed to hate, the kind of person who left girls crying in the bathroom. With a single smile he got away with everything. That was the kind of person Drae was, and I hated him.
"I'm going to tell him on Monday." Sunny's voice was quiet and she had her face buried in her hands. My best friend, the girl who claimed to not be afraid of anything, was embarrassed.
I knew I wouldn't be able to change her mind. Once Sunny was convinced to do something, there was no stopping her.
"What do you think Hayden?" She gazed at me, her blue eyes glinted with worry.
"I think, he if does anything mean, I'm gonna kill him."
