Chapter 2

To Believe or not to Believe

Two years later...

The room was semi-dark the automatic retractable blinds were halfway closed keeping out most of the morning light. John lay prostrate across the bed hung over from his wild escapade the night before. Cheryl rising from sleep clothed herself with John's dress shirt that was slung across the bottom of the bed. Her golden blonde hair wildly matted to her head; she ran her fingers through it a time or two as to detangle it a bit. She quietly sneaked out of bed, picking up different pieces of her clothing that lay scattered across the floor. She stepped over liquor bottles, shoes, leftover Chinese food and a turned over chair or two. A smile came to her face remembering bits and pieces of the night events. She looked over at Johns half naked body that was partially covered with a sheet. Cheryl tiptoed to the restroom as not to awaken him. She turned on the water and stepped into the shower.

John was awakened by his mother's voice as she pounded upon the door like a mad woman. Flipping his hair from his face with his hand, he rubbed his eyes a couple of times but his progressively degenerative sight was getting worse. Looking around the room, he realized his place was a total disaster. But he didn't care. He was drinking more and more to keep away the fear of being completely blind. His head pounded even more at the sound of his mother knocking violently on the door.

"John open this door, now... I mean it!"

John grabbed at his denim pants that were on the floor. He slipped them on and as he made his way to the door, he heard the shower running in the bathroom and remembered Cheryl being over, last night.

"Hold on mother, I'm coming...for heaven's sake!"

As soon as John opened the door his mother pushed her way past John... She instantly started in on him about his responsibilities.

She looked around the room and was appalled at the sight.

"John this destructive behavior has to stop. Just look at this place."

"Mother please, I'm not a child. You don't have to lecture me on how to behave."

"John you are the heir to everything. How can you just give up on life just because?"

"Yes, mother, say it...Just because... I'm going blind. Something that you and Dad just so happened not to tell me about. Why didn't you tell me that I had this eye defect?"

She turn toward John and looked in his eyes.

"Because John, we didn't want you to act like you are acting now. You are just giving up as if your entire life is over. Besides, the doctor told us when you were younger you had a 50% chance of the disease not showing up."

"Really mother, well I guess the other 50% got me. You guys could have at least prepared me for all of this; instead of everything crashing in on me all at once."

The bathroom door cracked opened and Cheryl embarrassingly walked out. "Hello Mrs. Holloway. Sorry about the intrusion but I have an early appointment to make it too. I'm just going to leave."

Mrs. Holloway turned her back towards the half opened blinds and didn't acknowledge the half-dressed girl presence. Cheryl did not mind one bit, she gave John a wink and scurried out the door.

"I just can't believe you hang around that gold digging hussy. She makes me sick just to look at her..."

"Mother please...spare me. For you, no one is good enough for me. The truth is; I like her so it doesn't really matter what you think of her."

"Oh is that correct? Don't forget who you are talking too. It was me who told you about that other so called girlfriend...what's her name...Evett? You were sooooo in love with her all through high school and college and what she end up doing to you... breaking your heart. So don't tell me, I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't care what you think of me John; just know I have your best interest at heart."
