it was late at night and i sat outside on my balcony smoking a cigarette with close friends. i passed the cigarette to olive next to me who took a drag from it. her girlfriend, mickey, sat next to her waiting for her turn at the cancer stick.
"so where is niall? aren't you usually with him?" mickey question once she finally got her hands on the cigarette.
"he's out on a date." i answered. mickey broke out coughing.
"wait, what?" olive asked.
"he's on a date." i repeated. the cigarette was passed back to me. i took a long drag from it, feeling the warmth fill me.
"how do you feel about it?" olive asked. her concern leaked into her voice.
"what do you mean? i'm not his keeper." i said. mickey and olive started giggling with each other. "am i missing something here?"
"yes, you like him." mickey blurted out.
"no, i don't." i said quickly.
"denial ain't just a river." mickey said.
"it's not denial if i mean it." i argued. my cheeks got flushed at my lack of comfort from the situation.
"he likes him, this is so cute." olive said squealing. they both got up before passing me what's left over of my cigarette.
"we've got to get going but we'll see you again." mickey explained. mickey patted my shoulder while olive kissed my forehead.
"close the door on your way out." i whispered.
i'm still on the balcony when niall comes to see me in the morning. i had stayed out and up all night battling myself in my head.
