Chapter 40

Cali Woods

A large man dressed in all black stops me and Dante from entering my fathers house. I look to Dante, wondering if this was normal or if something was wrong. They'd recognize him right?

"Mr. Woods does not allow women in. Strict orders." The guard says, sounding like a robot.

I roll my eyes, stepping up onto the front porch, "This woman so happens to be his beloved daughter. Please tell him I am here to see him and I want to speak to him now."

The guards eyes shift to Dante who only shrugs his shoulders, like a secret message saying that he could leave and go retrieve my father. Dante's large hands find my back as he keeps me steady, I hadn't realized I was leaning on him for support. I had so many things going through my head, like what exactly would I ask him when I saw him? I had known him my entire life and went through things with him that no daughter would ever dream of doing. So why couldn't I think of one simple question that would answer all my problems?

Because I was weak. I wasn't cut out for any of this. I knew my father was in some dirty business when I was young but I had no clue he had cellars underneath our house. I couldn't believe that while my mother told me bed time stories at night my father was more than likely torturing stories out of men not even seven feet below me, "I don't think I can do this, Dante." I look up at his tall frame, feeling light headed and nauseous.

Dante kisses my forehead, "Ask him whatever is eating away at that pretty mind of yours. I know it's swimming with a lot of stuff but focus on the main things, ask him what you really want to know."

I hear footsteps inside the house, indicating that someone was coming back with some kind of news, I just hoped it wasn't the guard telling me to go away because my father didn't want to see me.

The front door opens quickly, giving me a perfect view of my father in his most expensive suit with a sad look on his face. A look he only held when he was about to break something down for me, but I didn't want him to be in control of this conversation like he always was. I wanted to be the one to ask questions and interrogate.

"Why did you make me kill that man so many years ago?" My mouth opened before I even registered what was happening. I shocked myself and Dante, whose had on my back stilled for a second.

My father looked down at me, giving me a blank expression that told me that wasn't a fair question, "Let's no discuss this now, Calista. Come inside and get something to drink so you can calm down. I can practically hear that brain of yours turning."

I grit my teeth and move to stand closer to my father, "I'd rather not walk into a house that hold more secrets than a widowed wife. I want you to tell me what I want to hear and not the other way around."

I don't hear Dante move closer to me, indicating that I had stepped on untouched territory and there was no way to go back, "I just want to know why you made me kill him so young. Why me?" Tears prickled my eyes, making them heavy and itchy.

My father sighs, stepping out of the house and onto the porch, only and arms length away from me, "I made you kill him because I wanted you to know what was important in life. I brought you into this mess and I wanted to make sure that you could find your way out. I blame myself every day for bringing your mother and you into this life but she already knew. She loved me too damn much to let me go so she but both of your lives at risk. I made you kill that man because I wanted you to see how easily a life could be taken away by any particular person-"

"So you made me kill him? I wasn't even a teen yet and I had already killed a man!" I was now hysterical, tears smudging my makeup and leaving back trails down my cheeks.
