Chapter 12

Maya leaned against Riley's bed frame as Riley freaked about what to wear on her date with Charlie.

"Riley it's bowling." Maya lightly chuckled. "Not prom."

"I know," Riley looked at the dress she was holding, then put it back. "But this night needs to be perfect!" she sat down by Maya.

Perfect, Maya hates that word.

Nothing is perfect.

"I really like Charlie, Maya." Riley told her and looked at her best friend.

"Then be yourself, Riles. Because he likes you and you like him." Maya smiled at her best friend.

"Thanks Maya, that helps. A lot." she smiled and they hugged.

"Anytime."

Maya just wanted the night to be over.

She was not looking forward to this.

At all.

She really did want to go out with Lucas, more than anything. She just didn't want to be tagging along, she hated third wheeling. All of this was forced, and Maya just wanted it to be calm. Simple.

Things were so easy as a kid. There were not as much worries as before. She knew everyone was there for her, well she thought. But now that she's growing up, things have changed and she's become more isoltaed from the world, keeping to herself. She only let certain people in, and sometimes wished she wouldn't have.

She knew the night would not be how she wanted it.

She wanted the world to just stop.

-

Riley, Charlie, Farkle, and Smackle led the way while Maya and Lucas were behind them.

Maya, did not want to be with them. She just wanted to go home to The Matthews'.

Lucas wanted to be with Maya. That's all he dreamed of. But he could tell Maya didn't want to be here, so he played it off cool.

"So," Lucas broke the ice between them, getting Maya's attention turned from the floor to him. "Here we are."

"Yeah." Maya half smiled. "Here we are."

"Why not try to enjoy the night, as friends?" Lucas asked and Maya nodded in agreement.

"Sure, as friends."

She did not want it to be as friends.

She wanted it as dates.

But she would like her first real date on her own. Not this way. Not how she was forced.

She wants it her choice.

So this?

It's not a date.

This is just living hell.

-

"Come with me." Lucas whispered into Maya's ear. Maya looked at him like he was insane as Lucas held his hand out. Maya cautiously took his hand and he helped her up, leading her to the arcade.

"Why are we here Huckleberry?" Maya asked curiously as all the lights lite up.

"Well we both hate watching Riley, Charlie, Farkle, and Smackle bowl. Well, barely. They don't really bowl..." Lucas trailed off, making Maya laugh. "Anyways, let's play some games."

"Alright Ranger Rick, you're on." Maya smirked and Lucas got tokens.

"Skeeball?" Lucas asked.

"You are so on." Maya laughed and they both raced for skeeball.

After rounds and rounds of games, and no one noticing they had left. Maya had a strange feeling. Like they were being watched.

"Lucas?" Maya asked, snapping Lucas' focus from the game to Maya.

He knew it was important.

Maya had said Lucas, instead of his nicknames given by her.

"Yeah?" Lucas asked.

"Do you feel like we're being..." Maya trailed off and hugged herself. "Watched?"

"No..." Lucas looked at her with concern and raised his eyebrows. "Do you?"

"Yeah, but it's probably in my head." Maya tried to shrug it off.

"Maya, do you want to go back home?" Lucas asked and Maya shrugged.

"I know you're having fun-" Maya started.

"It's not about me. It's about you." Lucas told her, making Maya look down. "Are you comfortable here?"

Maya looked up at him, and all Lucas could see was emotion on her eyes. She was obviously scared, hurt, and sad. "No, not really."

"Let's get our coats." Lucas grabbed her hand and led her out of the arcade.

Yes, he was having a great time with Maya. And he didn't want it to end. But her safety was way more important.

He had fixed him. He wanted to fix her.

He was going to help her. No matter the cost.

"Lucas, we don't have to go." Maya sighed and the two of them walked out of the bowling place.

"Maya, I don't want you in danger. You weren't comfortable, that's understandable." Lucas told her. "We can always go back together."

"Huh?" Maya's head shot up.

Back?

Together?

Was this actually happening?

"Maya," Lucas smiled and stopped walking, taking both of her hands into his. "I really like you, will you go out with me?"

"Of course I will Huckleberry." Maya smiled and they hugged.

"This could've turned out bad." Lucas laughed.

"Yeah." Maya laughed and they let go. "Now can we go back? I still have that weird feeling."

"Of course." Lucas smiled, taking her hand into his.

He finally was going on a date with Maya Hart.

-

"It was magical." Riley finished explaining her date to Maya.

"That's awesome Riles." Maya smiled.

"What about you peaches?" Riley asked.

"Well, Lucas asked me out!" Maya told her and they both started jumping up and down and screaming.

"When? Where? What!?" Riley asked. Maya explained her night to Riley then smiled.

"It was magical." she smiled, then frowned and her eyebrows furrowed together. "Until I felt someone was watching us."

"What?" Riley asked.

"I don't know. I just kept feeling someone was watching me and Lucas." Maya sighed. "Am I going insane?"

"No peaches," Riley sighed. "Maya, it's ok to be scared. Everyone get's scared. Even you have to get scared. Maya, admit it. You're scared, and that's ok. We're all here for you. You'll get over this, but you have to let us help."

"Riley?" Maya asked.

"Yeah?"

"I think I'm scared." Maya told her and Riley hugged her.

"It's ok, I got you." Riley smiled.

"Thanks Riles." Maya smiled.

"Anytime Peaches."
