Prologue
I ran as fast as my legs would take me towards the hospital, dodging people and cars as I carelessly crossed the road not looking both ways. The run there consisted of cars honking their horns and people screaming at me because I pushed them out of my way. Ugh, I really did not like running, which is why I always got a D in gym class, but I ran like the wind this time because Adrian really needed me. I got a call from Adrian that his dad was in the hospital to finally have his lung transplant today. They said that he had a 75% chance of surviving the surgery, which was pretty good but Adrian was still really worried so he asked me to be there for him.
I bolted through the hospital door soaking wet as all the precipitation had decided to fall today, but at the time I really couldn't care less, I had to help Adrian get through the 6 hours of waiting to see if his dad was going to be okay, so it really didn't help that Adrian was the most impatient person I had ever known.
I didn't bother stopping at the front desk because I knew where to go since Mr. Tucker had been here all week. So I visited him a couple of times with Adrian
I fast walked through the hall being careful not to slip since I had just run through rain so my shoes were completely soaked. I saw a row of chairs and people either sitting or standing. As I got closer I recognised Adrian pacing back and forth.
"Adrian" I said when I was close enough so he could hear me, I was careful not to raise my voice as there were other people sleeping on the chairs. He raised his head and I immediately saw the worry in his eyes, so evident it was hard not to notice them. It was weird since he was always so calm and collected. I spotted the bags under his eyes and knew that he hadn't had any sleep at all, he also looked like he had been crying.
He hugged me. "Thank you so much for coming" he whispered into my ear. "I really don't know what I would do without you" he added while we pulled apart. I smiled sadly at that.
"Me neither" I answered
I greeted Adrian's mother when I realised that she was sitting on one of the chairs and sat down beside him with Adrian.
"So when did he go in?" I asked
"just about an hour ago" she answered
"well how are you doing?"
"How am I supposed to be doing?" he snapped suddenly
"I'm sorry, I'm just..." he trailed
"Hey, don't worry, my dad is the surgeon. He doesn't mistake okay, have a little faith" I reassured him confidently.
"Yeah, you're right, of course you're right, I just have to calm down that's all." She said inhaling deeply.
We waited around and counted down the hours until it was supposed to be finished. I let my mind wander, thinking about what might happen if something went wrong in the surgery or if they had run out of supplies or helpers. What might happen then? What would happen if someone lost their dad at 17; that would break him. That would be the worst thing that could ever happen to him.
But would everything be okay between me and Adrian? After all my dad was the surgeon. What would I do without him? Adrian was always the one who stood up for me at school whenever I was being bullied. Adrian was a jock he played for the Junior team for football and he was the captain. That was pretty understandable considering the fact that he was 6 foot 2 and was only 17, who was also extremely athletic. So that was nowhere near my height of only 5 foot 4 and I was pretty slender with sickly looking twig arms. whereas he had a muscular build and broad shoulders. After standing up for me and breaking Scott Christian's nose, no one dared touch a single hair on my head unless they wanted to face the wrath of Adrian. You just can't trust anyone with 2 first names.
6 hours later a doctor, probably someone who assisting my dad with the surgery came up to us. We all gathered around him eager to hear what happened
"good news" he started "he's going to be okay, he just needs some rest. He's sleeping now but if you want to visit him go right ahead" he finished with a smile on his face. I looked towards a wide eyed Adrian who was showing off his pearly whites, this was honestly the happiest I'd seen him all day. He took my hand and we raced down the hall to where he was.
We walked in and saw Peter, Adrian's dad lying down in bed with tubes in his arms and in his nostrils, he was also connected to a monitor. He looked so tired even though he was sleeping. Adrian and his mom immediately sat beside him on either side and held his hand while I stood at his feet admiring the view of a family reunion.
"I love you so much dad" he whispered but loud enough for me to hear. "What would I do without you? Thank God! How are you?" He exclaimed
So it went on like that for a few minutes, with them expressing their love for Peter and thanking the heavens for another day with him.
"Dad I just-" Adrian started but was interrupted by aloud beeping noise. Peter had started heaving and coughing as he held both the railings beside his bed and heaved deeply with a gurgled noise. the more he coughed the more blood started to appear on his hospital gown. It was the monitor beside him which showed less and less zigzags as time went by, along with a number that started dropping rapidly.
"Honey!" Charlotte, Adrian's mom screamed "What's happening! Get a doctor in here, GO!" she demanded to me but nurses and doctors had already started flooding the room. There were commands being thrown everywhere and the room became instantly crowded, the nurses and doctors had gathered around the bed where Peter was. I couldn't see what was happening since everyone was taller than me but all I could hear was a doctor saying "70 volts" and "Clear"
"Miss you have to get out, please you can't be in here now" a nurse said to me while she put her hand on my shoulder. I looked around for Adrian, I found him crying with both his hands on the side of his head and rubbing it slowly, a nurse was trying to get him out of the room too while he was shouting "DAD!"I couldn't quite hear the rest because everyone else was screaming themselves.
Then he turned to me, glared and mouthed
'Your fault'
I was pushed out of the room by the nurse and so was Adrian. They let his mom stay in there with him because she just wouldn't budge, and if they pushed her out she would just scream at them complicating the situation. Adrian was sat on the floor and I joined him. We sat there in silence for a little while, and then suddenly a nurse burst out of the room and shouted,
"Where is Doctor Parker?! Has anyone seen him? It's urgent!" The nurse screeched, panicked
"What? He should be around here somewhere, he wouldn't just leave like that, he wouldn't." I answered.
"Doctor Schmitt to room 207! Stat!" The nurse shouted again
I took out my cell phone and dialled his number. It went straight to voicemail. 'Ugh dad where are you?' I thought
"We're losing him!" someone shouted from inside the room. I called his number again and again but just like before, it went straight to voicemail.
I looked over at Adrian who looked horrified and his hair was pointing in all directions since he had run his hands through it so many times.
"WHERE IS HE?!" Adrian screamed at no one in particular.
"My mum is lying on a hospital bed dying while your dad is probably out smoking or gone to a bar for some Vodka! That alcoholic!" He bellowed towards me.
"I... I- he wouldn't do this" I stammered in response
"Well he would and he is!"
'Beeeeeeeeeep' the monitor rang
