District 1: Reapings
Third-Person POV
All the kids file into their places and Mayor Georgeston begins his lecture. His monotone bores the crowd easily. Many of the older children are eager to volunteer.
The Mayor finishes his long speech about the rebellion and the merciful Capitol and the defeat of the rebels. Then, a video is shown of the rebels being put on trial and executed. Next, he introduces Maybelle Maddoy, the escort, fresh from the Capitol with a firey hairdo and a golden suit. Finally, she steps up to the mic with an energetic squeal.
"Helllooo District 1! It is my honor to be able to select the ten random tributes, aged ten through twenty, to be part of the 1,000th annual Hunger Games! Let's begin!" she grins, revealing a complete set of shining gold teeth. She swishes the ginormous amount of slips in a glass bowl around. "Carlie Paddison!" she announces. A tall girl rushes forward saying; "I volunteer!"
"And what is your name?" Maybelle asks.
"I'm Geselle Ranks and I'm sixteen!" she smirks confidently.
"Bravo! Take a seat dear, and next is... Kate Flicker!" Maybelle screams.
"I volunteer! I volunteer!" a frantic voice cries. A gorgeous girl with curly dark hair clambers onto the stage.
"I'm sixteen, too, and I'm Jewel Flicker." she manages a grin. Maybelle squints at her.
"Then you must be Kate's sister!" she declares and continues, "Our third tribute is... Sunny Williams!" A tiny girl starts walking forward from the eleven-year-old section.
"I volunteer!" a boy steps forward. "I'm Cosmo Dragon and I'm nineteen." he advances onto the stage and sits.
"That's a good boy! For our fourth tribute-" she begins.
"I volunteer." a voice breaks in. "I'm Nigel Brinks, I'm eighteen, and you'll see my face in the Absolute Games!"
"Enthusiasm! I love it!" Maybelle gushes and carries on. "Next is Linda Miles." a tiny girl's eyes widen with fear and shock.
"No! I volunteer." an impetuous-sounding boy marches up the stairs. "I'm her brother, Jared. I'm thirteen." he boldly admits. "But don't underestimate me!"
"No one will." Maybelle assures him. "Sequential to that is Marylin Tarnish." a short girl walks forward. "I'm fifteen."
"Any volunteers?" Maybelle inquires. Silence answers her.
"I suppose District 1 ran out of Careers. The seventh tribute of this District is Quinn Karr!" she shouts with vigor. A mopey boy with shaggy hair runs up to the podium.
"And how old are you?" she grins her flashy grin again.
"I'm eleven."
"The youngest so far! Next is... Ionia Rent." she remarks.
"No! Ionia!" a little voice squeaks from the ten-year-old section as a huge girl, though hardly a girl, strides like a dancer forwards.
"I'm twenty. Penny, shh." she says in an alto tone.
"Wow! Our first twenty-year-old! Not a kid anymore! Our penultimate tribute is... Sloan Goar!" she cheeps. A muscular boy paces to the stage, emitting a solemn aura. "Really? No more volunteers? I'm surprised." Maybelle muses pathetically.
"I'm seventeen. No one needs to volunteer for me." he talks in a deep voice and takes his seat.
"Okay, okay!" Maybelle wrinkles her pudgy nose. "Our tenth and last District 1 tribute is..." the crowd, especially parents with young children, hold their breaths, knowing that there are no more volunteers. "Winnie Zun!" she screeches. A beefy girl comes forth. The heavyset teenager says "Hey! I may be big, but I ain't bad! Winnie's gonna Win! 'Cause that's my nickname, now!"
