Demi woke up the next morning and got a shower. She curled her hair and did her make up just the way she wanted it to look in her picture. She walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. She popped a piece of read into the toaster and spread some peanut butter on it. As she ate she turned on the tv, a news story about abuse was on. She watched closely as the teens were interviewed. She could never tell anyone about her father abusing her. She knew if she did she would probably be killed. She jumped as her father said "ready to go?"
"Yeah," she said and turned off the tv before he could see what she was watching.
"I can't believe I'm taking my daughter to get her licence. It seems like just yesterday you were twelve."
Suddenly the night of her mothers death flashed back. The fight, her packing her bags and getting in the car drunk. She remembered the police coming to the door and tellin her and her father about the car accident. She remembered how she felt when she heard the words from the doctor. "Your mother has passed." he said with a frown on his face. She snapped back to reality just as her father was yelling at her from her new car to drive to the DMV.
After getting her licence she drove back home. "Well, Clarissa and I are leaving now. Be responsible. No junk food or drinks. No parties. No boys."
"Yes sir," she said.
"And you know what will happen if I find out you broke any of these rules."
"Yes sir," Demi said again, this time her voice shaking a little.
Her dad and Clarissa walked out the door and she picked up her phone to dial Jason's number. Her father might have said no boys in the house but never that she couldn't go anywhere.
"Hello beautiful," Jason said as he picked up the phone.
Demi laughed, "Hello, Jason."
"What you up to gorgemous?"
"My dad and the she devil just left, wanna hang out?"
"Sure, your place or mine?"
"How about ice cream at Brusters?" she asked cheerfully.
"Sounds good to me. Meet you there in twenty minutes."
"Okay!" Demi said and smiled the brightest she had smiled in months.
When she got to the Brusters she immediately saw Jason. His black long hair and lip ring were unmistakable. He looked at her and smiled brightly. He was beautiful. He was tall and thin, some may think "too skinny.," but Demi thought he was perfect. The thought that they had a chance of being together made her extremely happy. She walked over to him and they walked to the order window. "I'll have a chocolate chip cookie dough milshake." Demi said.
"I'll have the same," Jason said and laid a ten dollar bill on the counter.
"You don't have to pay for me Jason." she said.
"I want to," Jason said and smiled his killer smile at her. They sat and ate their ice cream slowly, talking about school and cheer and football. When the ice cream was all gone they walked to her car.
"I had so much fun, Jason." Demi said and smiled at him. "Probably more fun than I've had since my mom died."
"Well I'm glad I could contribute to that fun." He opened the car door for her and she got in the car. He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. Demi blushed and looked down at the steering wheel. "I love you, Demi." he said. "I just want you to know that. They say that love is forever and your forever is all that I need." Demi had never had anyone say something that sweet to her.
Demi couldn't respond. She didn't know how to love someone, especially a man. She smiled at him and said "me too." He knew she didn't know how to reply. He smiled sweetly at her to let her know he understood.
"I'll see you later Dem," he said and waved goodbye to her.
"By Jay," she said. As he walked away she hit her palm against her head. "Stupid, stupid, stupid," she said to herself. "Why can't you just tell the boy you love him?" She beat her head against the steering wheel and then started the car. She drove home in silence, no music, pure silence.
When she got home she walked in to see the house was spotless, she walked into the kitchen and saw a hispanic woman wiping the counter. "Umm, hello?"
"Oh, you must be Demi," the woman said. "Your father hired me while he is away so you aren't left with all the chores. He said the only thing you need to worry about is your laundry, but that you were used to that."
"Umm, yes. Can I ask what days and times you are going to be here?"
"I will be here Monday Wednesday and Friday from four to six."
"Alright, well I'll leave you be." Demi said and walked up the stairs to her room.
Demi layed on her bed thinking "what the hell am I supposed to do now?"
She looked over on her night stand and saw the picture of her mother and her when they went to her aunts house for a few weeks in the summer. A tear fell from her face.
"I'm gonna do something fun this week for you Mom."
She smiled and thought to herself "what would mom do if she was still here?"
She sat up and grabbed her phone and called Jason again. "Hey Jay, come over. I don't care if my dad doesn't want you over here. I want you to come over. There's something I want to talk to you about."
