The court date came around and Demi was more nervous than she had ever been in her life. She sat in the court room waiting on them to call her to the stand. The judge came in and everyone stood and sat as the judge ordered. Demi was called to the stand, she walked slowly to the brown, wooden chair and sat there nervously bouncing her leg. She looked at the attorney who came up to ask questions.

"Ms. Lovato, how old are you?"

"Sixteen ma'am." Demi said nervously, her voice shaking.

"How long have you been in the car of only your father?"

"Since I was twelve."

"Were your parents divorced?"

"No, my mother was killed in an accident."

"I'm sorry to hear that," the attorney said sympathetically. "How long has the abuse been going on?"

"Since my mother was killed, about a week after the accident." Demi remembered everything so vividly. Suddenly an outburst came from her father.

"She's a damn liar!" he yelled.

"Order!" the judge yelled. "Contain your client or I will charge him with contempt of court."

"Demi, have you ever told anyone about the abuse?" the attorney continued.

"I only told Jason about a week ago."

The questions went on like this for a few minutes. Demi's father's attorney attacked her with questions like "Why did you never tell anyone?" and "Are you making this up in spite of something recent your father has done?"

The court was finally over. They turned to the jury. The judge asked, "ladies and gentlemen of the jury, how do you find?"

The man in the first seat spoke, "We find the defendant, guilty."

Demi's attorney hugged her and Jason came up and kissed her.

When Demi and Jason got to the car their bags were in the back and they were headed to New York. They had money and everything else they needed to start their new life. Jason's mother came up to the car and hugged them both. "I'm going to miss you two, you must come visit every chance you get."

"We will, Mom." Jason said.

"Thank you Mrs. Smith," Demi said, "for everything that you've done for me."

"You are more than welcome my dear." she said and embraced Demi.

Demi and Jason got in the car and drove away to new york. They would move into their tiny apartment and start their new life together. Demi would never have to see her father again if she chose that way. She and Jason would be happy for the rest of their lives. Or would they?
