I run through the trees, desperately trying to escape my assailant- no. Assailants. Something was chasing me, something that wasn't human and wasn't alone. I am terrified, tripping over low branches and tree roots. It's pitch black out, no stars, the only light is from the full moon that hangs in the sky. I hear growling behind me. I keep running but I need to see how close they are, my blonde hair flies over my shoulder as I whip my head to look back. I stumble over something on the forest floor, landing on my hands and knees. I hear them coming, I look up and see several large shadows come into view. A howl erupts from in front of me, I see the grey eyes of a beast staring at me. It lunges, I scream.
I woke up with the feeling of teeth at my throat. I sat up and looked around my room. Small, cozy, and safe.
"Just a dream." I breathe aloud to myself.
I got up and walked towards my bathroom, grabbing my fuzzy blue robe off the back of my door on the way there. I turned on the light in the bathroom and walked over to the sink, staring at my reflection in the mirror to make sure I'm okay and my dream was just a dream. I look at my neck in the mirror, no scratches or bites.I'm fine.
I turn from the mirror and strip off my pj's. After I've removed all of my clothes, I get in the shower and begin my routine. Hair, body, face. Once everything is clean and shaven, I shut off the water and grab my towel to dry off. I throw on my robe and put my hair up in the towel. From the other room I can hear my phone buzzing. No doubt it's my best friend Beau or as I call him Bae, since that's how his name is pronounced. I saunter over to my bedside table where my phone was charging and unlock it.
Hey gorgeous, you better be ready at 7. I'mma pick you up.
Smiling, I send him a text back.
Okay Bae, and who're you calling gorgeous? I don't have my makeup on yet. I still look like a troll xP
I look over at the clock as I put my phone down, it's 6:20AM. Time for makeup. I go back into my bathroom and put on my face with my daily look. A little bit of powder, some eye shadow, liner on top, and mascara to finish it all off. After I assessed my handiwork and deemed it satisfactory I exited my bathroom and went to my closet. I decided on my favorite dark blue skinnies and a white blouse. Pairing it with some tan boot wedges and gold bangles, I get dressed. Twenty minutes later I'm dressed and ready to go, I grab my phone and my bag and make my way down to the kitchen where my parents probably have breakfast ready.
As I descend the stairs and enter the kitchen, my parents are waiting for me. They greet me immediately. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" They shout in unison.
"Thanks mom and dad." I say as I laugh. They do this every year, a big breakfast, the shouting. Next they're going to give me my gift, make a bad joke about how I'm getting old, then we go our separate ways for school and work until we all get home. Then we eat cake and ice cream and watch my favorite movies. Spending time with each other is really important in my family. We tell each other everything, they say it builds trust.
"How does it feel to be 17?"My mom asks as she hugs me.
"The same way it felt being 16 yesterday." I giggle as I hug her back. I let go and move to my dad to give him a hug too.
"Eat up sweetheart, Beau said he'd be here shortly." My dad instructed as he pushed me towards the chair I always sat in at the kitchen table. I sat down like he wanted and began eating my waffles and fruit while pretending not to notice as my parents disappeared to get my present from the other room. A few moments later I felt a hand on my shoulder as a small blue box with a silver bow on it was placed in front of me.
"What's this?" I ask with feigned curiosity as I smiled up at my parents while taking the small box in my hands.
"Open it and find out." My dad answered with a wink.I open the box slowly, taking care not to knock the bow off of the box. When I saw what was inside I gasped. Laying in the blue velvet was a silver necklace, it was a pendent. It looked like a crescent moon.
"I love it!" I got up and hugged both of my parents. I was about to put it on but I heard a horn beep outside. "That's Bae, I have to go." I closed the box and went to my front door. "Thanks for the necklace. It's really beautiful! I'll see you guys later. Love you!" I call out as I'm leaving, I put the box with the necklace in it in my bag as I head out the door and into the driveway.
