"by ki ha nah." her hands intertwined above her head as she lets out a satisfied sigh. she tucks her long jet-black hair behind her ears before shutting her laptop. one assignment down.

her sight shifts to the miniature chest next to her lamp as she reaches out to switch it off. she retracts her fingers, hesitating to open it. "ah, fine." curiosity had won in her mental debate. as the chest opened in her palms, it was also as though she had opened the gates containing her memories in her mind--key entering the padlock as fragments of her past threatened to escape. a turn and a click and everything she had accomodated in a corner of her mind was set free.

ha nah, clear eyes set on the question in front of her as she figures the solution. back in high school, many would agree that she was exceptionally known for her beauty. her bright hazelnut-brown eyes stood out amongst her tiny facial features. strangely enough, her personality completely contradicted her physicality. she was reserved and not as sociable as her cohort had expected.

"hey, are you done with question 12?" her seatmate and also her closest confidant, hye eun, elbowed her sides. "here." ha nah hands over her solution. "no guarantee though." hye eun slid her paper towards her as her right hand frantically copies her answer, professional enough to know this wasn't her first time.

ha nah looked out her classroom window to the wide open field two levels downstairs while having her assignment taken from her. the late morning breeze ushered in and planted a gentle kiss on her face, cheeks slowly turning pink. they were in the midst of welcoming winter, expecting the season to arrive in the next week or so. it was chilly and this was her favourite time of the year, temperature just right she wouldn't sweat buckets or shiver constantly.

"what are you doing?" she heard hye eun exclaim, as she turned her body to come face to face with seokjin. "hey," their senior from the classroom directly upstairs theirs began. "for you." and on ha nah's table was a sandwich and a carton of milk, droplets visible on the packaging as it rolled down to the surface. how long did he wait to give me these?

they had recess a period before theirs, something ha nah and hye eun had envied. the mouth-watering fragrance of braised pork ribs had wafted into the classroom half an hour before, and in thirty minutes time, they were expecting everyone to speed their way to the cafeteria like their lives depended on it. every day, the entire cohort took in the scent of freshly made food, as they struggle to complete the final thirty minutes of class before recess began.

"it's ok, seokjin." before she could reach out to return the food, the boy had already brisk-walked his way out of the classroom and back onto the corridor where his friends were awaiting his good news.

as ha nah moved the snacks to the corner of her table, a pink slip of paper peeked from beneath the sandwich. another one. without reading, she stuffed it into the front pocket of her backpack.

confession letters, of course she received those. though they normally go unreplied and into her mini chest as soon as she gets home. no, no more distractions--the promise she made to herself on her last year of high school.

today, her curiosity got the better of her. as she gently scrambled through the colourful pieces of paper, she reached one that caught her attention. one in a torn foolscap paper, rough edges visibly showing.

hi. i'm finally doing this. spur of the moment but, i'll be waiting for you at whalien cafe at 7pm tonight. um yeah see you there. -jk-

shit. she mentally cursed at herself for always missing out on reading those letters. she shuts her eyes as she recalled who could have given this to her. the 'jk' he signed off with isn't helping much either. it's been a whole year since they graduated. a pang of guilt hits her but she brushed it off as she believed he wouldn't still be thinking about her. it's been some time and she's confident he had moved on. right?
